Instead of paying $30 to see a nurse at the office that tells me what I can and cant eat and how to eat it... Does anyone here suffer from Gestational Diabetese? I would like to know a good website or if you can let me know what I can and cant eat and how much of it. I just dont wana spend money on going into a "class" at the doctors office.

Thanks so much!!!! :hugs:

I follow a low GI diet and don't eat any sugar. Basically, no white carbs - so no white rice, white pasta, white bread, potatoes, parsnips etc. I'm only allowed 4 portions of fruit a day. 1 portion of grapes amounts to just 10 grapes so be super careful that you're not unwittingly eating too much fruit sugar - I'd eat a whole bunch of grapes and think I'd probably just about had one of my 4 a day before I saw the dietician! Tinned fruit in syrup is a big no no and bananas seem to send my blood sugar through the roof.

Breakfast cereal contain lots of hidden sugar so only go for ones that say 'sugar free' and are wholegrain. I mostly eat sugar free muesli or porridge with skimmed milk.

I find sugar free jelly gives me a good sweet hit and for snacks salty microwave popcorn works well.

Just google GD diet and you should be able to find a whole lot of information on it. I also saw the GD specialist midwife and she was so incredibly helpful. Even with the help of google and various websites and a huge amount of help from the lovely ladies on here, it was still great to talk to the specialist face to face. Is it possible to ask your hospital to hook you up with some other pregnant women with GD so you can share resources?

Best of luck with it all.

For me, I just cut out the sugar and carbs and tested one hour after every meal. If my sugar levels were too high, then I tried to figure out what had caused it. If it was good then next time I added a bit more carbs or sugar.

I found that I could have anything, provided I didn't have too much. The worse things were bread, green beans and orange juice, but I managed to not cut them out by halving the portion sizes. I even managed to fit in a daily chocolate ice cream if my sugar levels were low enough.

As long as you know about a balanced diet and you work out by testing your sugar levels what you can and can't eat much of you will be fine.

It is important you don't cut out carbs or fruit totally and eat a high fibre diet. If your sugar levels don't stay under control despite these changes, then you need to consider medication.

Just check everything you eat for the carbohydrate content. Don't too many at the same time. One advice I hear a lot is to keep a diary of what you eat and the blood sugar level after 1.5 h later. Anything that spikes, you don't eat again. But I would say that most people can cope with 30-40g of carbohydrate per meal.

I have type 2 diabetes, and am 9 weeks preg, so maybe things are different for me. I found that ANYWHERE I could get info I was ready to jump on board. I want a healthy pregnancy, and especially a healthy baby, so I did whatever I could to get things under control. So far, I went from oral meds to insulin shots, I test 2 hrs after every meal, and once before breakfast. My dietician told me NO fruits or milk or ceral for breakfast, as that is when your sugar has a better chance of rising. (Strange, it's all breakfast foods...) I eat 30 grams of carbs and 3 oz protein for breakfast. That amounts to an egg sandwich, as two slices of bread = 30 carbs. I'm allowed 220 total carbs for the day, and 2300 calories. My sugars have been running spot on, with the occasional oops brought on by white bread. But I found Whitewheat is perfect! Also, they don't recommend fruit juice, as a serving is very small, but loaded with sugar. Stick with fresh fruit. I have completely turned my life upside down, but that wonderful little bean is worth it!! Good luck ladies!
