So I have a scratchy throat now, which means one thing...I'm going to have a full blown cold in a day or two. What kind if medicine can I take that won't affect my 2 month old EBF baby and wont affect my milk supply? Benadryll is out of the question because it knocks me out and I need to be functional since I also have a toddler.

You can take paracetamol/acetaminophen/tylenol to reduce headache, sore throat and fever and drink lots of water to ease mucus and do steam inhalation. That's pretty much it if you want stuff that has been tested as safe. Tbh though those are the best things for a cold anyway. Its your choice to use menthol or not (my pharmacy said it wasn't tested as safe but I found no evidence it was harmful either. I reckoned sooooooo many people would by mentholated product over the counter without even asking that I was happy to have a bit here and there when I was really struggling).

A couple of tbs of ascorbic acid in your juice every few hours. Reduce the amount needed if you reach bowel intolerance (the runs) after a dose.

Most medication OTC is safe for breastfeeding, i would avoid psuedophederine. Check out kellymom.com for specific types. Also review anything you plan to take on the lactmed database (just Google lactmed).

If you're into herbal supplements, I've heard that sambucuc can help fight off viruses.nand it's safe while breastfeeding.
