Well just that really, we have known since ds was 2weeks he has reflux. But when the health visitor was here today we were talking about how from around 7-10 ds just wont stop crying no matter what I do. I go through everything and nothing is wrong. It is so tiring and he just does not stop. With dh being on nights this week and leaving at exactly 7pm hasnt been helping. Anyway getting off subject

So hv says sounds like he ALSO has a touch of colic!!!
So we have a refluxy, colicy baby who cant be soothed between 7 until he drops of to sleep n sometimes he will continue to wake till midnight

No real point just really feeling the strain. Dh left n within 2mins ds was screaming that was at 7.15 n he still hasnt stopped despite me trying everything (now 7.45 n i was meant to be getting some dinner when hubby left:dohh:) . Im just trying to comfort him but its hard when hes full blown screaming in your ear

Guess I just need to hear it will get better. I have already been told his reflux wont improve until weaning

My LO is a reflux baby. We used baby gaviscon in his milk until around five months. I weaned him at six and it just became food sick instead which is loads worse than milk sick! It did get better with medication but I still had no clean clothes for about six months! His reflux was almost gone by around 7 months but even now, at 11, he'll have the odd 'sicky' day (teething and tiredness makes it worse for my LO) and I still can't hold him in my best clothes!

Have to say that doesn't fill me with much confidence :haha: ds has silent reflux so is hardly ever sick luckily. Just the odd occassion. He is on cow and gate anti reflux but we have been given the gaviscon. Just waiting for chemist to get it in. Its more this constant screaming in the evening that does me in as no matter what i do or am doing he gets himself hysterical n wont stop until he has exhausted himself

My LO had both too. His screaming lasted from 9pm to 2am most nights. It started to get better around 6 weeks and the endless screaming stopped by 8 weeks.

Still has silent reflux but it's under control.

I feel for you! :hugs:

Ask your doctor if you can add a little cereal to his bottle. My lo is also on zantac twice a day. The colic will get better gradually. It sucks your dh hasn't been able to help during the witching hour(s). As odd as it sounds, turn on the TV to your favorite show, a comedy would be great, and crank it up. Distract yourself to preserve yourself. Best of luck! :hugs:

Has anyone mentioned cows milk protein intolerance or lactose deficiency as these can worsen reflux and are a common cause of "colic".

I hate the term "colic". In my personal experience its been used as a catch all term for crying so that health professionals don't have to investigate in the hope baby will grow out of whatever it is.

My dd2 was diagnosed with "colic" and silent reflux but she still cried almost constantly (upto 15 hrs a day). Was told by the dr that 'babies cry'. Eventually a hv suggested that she may have a lactase deficiency (this is common in small babies and most grow out of it unlike true lactose intolerance). She has a lactose free milk now and within a week she stopped crying all the time and her reflux was so much better. I have been told that cows milk protein intolerance causes the same effects (crying and worsens reflux). Its worth speaking to your gp and seeing if these are possibilities.

Hey my eldest had reflux until 12 months, which then vanished. He had colic which ended around that time also :flower:

Thanks
I did look into it and mentioned it to the doctor. He said that if he had a lactose intolerance then he would have more episodes of diareha whereas he keeps getting constipated :dohh:

I think when we start him on the gaviscon we might buy the comfort milk and see if that helps :)

Have you tried an earlier bedtime? Since 7-8 weeks we have been doing a bedtime routine of bath bottle bed, starting at 6 (he always used to get really grotty after 7 and impossible to settle). Within a few days he settled into it and now sleeps straight through that grotty time!

Also my LO has reflux, he couldn't handle aptamil or cow and gate milk and was prescribed a prescription milk with gaviscon and other meds. After he started refusing that we weaning him back onto hip organic milk, it's slightly thicker than the other milks and for some reason seems to be the only one he can handle. Lots of people on other baby reflux websites etc. have also had success with it which I why I tried it and we have managed to wean of 2/3 meds including the gaviscon which is evil stuff for constipation xx

A friend of mine's baby suffered with 'colic' until she tried her on comfort milk. Cleared up within a week. They tried switching back and the crying started again.

I've never experienced colic but if it were me, I'd be exploring whether there are underlying issues such as lactose intolerance.

you poor thing. One of those is tough enough.

I agree with pp, have you tried sleep earlier to miss out on the crying time? How does your lo sleep in the day? We went through the exact thing as you explained, 7 pm on the button, I used to dread the evenings :( YET, the only time it wouldn't happen was if we were in the car for a long drive (yep we were those parents, in the car! ) Looking back, in our case, lo was overtired, yet showed little signs of it and come 7, it was a nightmare. Thankfully it only lasted a few weeks and we introduced wind down time, bed time sooo early and I would do anything to get lo to sleep, whatever it took.

I hope your lo is feeling bettee soon and you get a break. keep up the good work. its hard to stay sane I know x

I agree, I think labeling a baby with colic is just lazy doctoring. I've read a few articles from well respected doctors who don't even feel like colic even exists & that the cases of colic from years past were actually reflux.

I don't remember how or if you said how you are feeding, but my first son had a little reflux. Not enough to be on medication but enough to upset him. We used a formula thickened with rice & it worked wonders. My second son I thought was starting down the reflux path & his doctor suggested a lactose allergy. Around 4 months after trying many MANY formulas, I started him on gerber good start & he started getting better. I don't know of it was that formula or just his digestive track finally matured. I also discovered he was tongue tied so he was having a hard time taking his bottles. I started him on solids early & since about 4 1/2 months, he's been a new baby. So he never did end up with reflux but things did get better, I hope that they do for you as well. Hang in there.

We did used to have a sort of routine with him, he would have his last bottle at 6 n then down at 7 sometimes awake n we would come in n soothe then leave. (Normally only took couple trys)
Then two weeks ago he had a growth spurt n cluster fed. Ever since he has been waking in the right with his reflux, and is eating all over the place. He wont settle down in the mornings anymore (used to wake 5-6 then go back down till 7-8) however now he will just cry n cry until i take him downstairs :dohh:
This might sound stupid but how do u do a bedtime routine with a baby who demand feeds???
He has been having problems with his reflux milk which he mever did before and the hv thinks he will drastically improve once on the gaviscon. She also said if he doesnt go back and get something stronger.
If he carrys on eating the way he is in the coning weeks then once he gets to 12weeks we are thinking of going to control feeding. But it all depends how he reacts to his new meds :/
I think your right in saying he is over tired though as if i am lucky he has a morning nap (11-1ish normally befote) n maybe 3-4 if im lucky most days its none. 5mins here during his bottle :dohh:
But i just dont know what to do

Sorry for silly mistakes. He finally dropped off for 30mins n then been up since. I got him tosleep on me, put him down, instant screaming :dohh:
So hes sleeping on me again n im to scared to put him down in fear of him waking. Im dying for pee and exhausted. (Hence spelling errors and on mobile)
Im having to stay on my mobile for fear of falling asleep :dohh: :haha:

It sounds alot like my lo, we went through a very similar thing. we tried gaviscon, it didn't make that much of a diff to our lo. I think she was just a pukey baby, no sooner asleep and then awake spitting up. We did use the cleva mamma reflux cushion and that was an absolute life saver.

Sleep wise your lo really only should have max 1+ 1/2 - 2 hours awake time. If we allowed our lo she would stay awake all day long, but we would pay for it later.

Roughly how long does your little one go between feeds? You could judge bedtime routine around this, for instance of your little one had a feed at 4pm and fed 2hours later, do your bed routine, do the 6 pm feed in your bedroom, pjs, lights low, soft music. I remember lo being awake after this feed until the next but she was so happy and relaxed it was ok.

controlled feeding imo is a massive no no. Your baby will go through so many diff growth spurts, its routine will change according to this, if he is teething he may need more or less. As someone said to me, as an adult I wouldn't like for someone to refuse me food if I was hungry. Babies are so intelligent and in tune and know exactly how much they need and will always fall into their own routine, which you can tweak if needed.
Have you read up on Wonder Weeks? The app is a life saver.

Ahh the little pet, he loves his mommy clearly. There is nothing tougher than needing a pee.

After feeding we had to keep lo upright for 20 mins, this helped the reflux alot too.

I feel your pain, we also had a baby with silent reflux and colic...he screamed from 8-11pm every single night for about 3-4wks until he started daycare then suddenly put himself into a routine at about 10wks old of going to bed at 6:30-7pm and the screaming stopped! It was so awful I really feel for you but it WILL end soon I bet! I know that's a small consolation bc even a week of screaming feels like forever :( I agree with pp have u tried a much earlier bed/bath routine to try and get him asleep well before the screaming starts??

My LO had reflux and colic. I'm now convinced it's all related to a yeast overgrowth in her gut. If I had to do over again I would have asked my doctor about giving her probiotic drops. You might considering bringing that up with your doctor.

Oliver had both colic and silent reflux so I feel your pain. He was prescribed gavsicon which really helped his reflux along with being put on Aptimal comfort milk.

For his colic the GP prescribed Colief drops. They're a naturally occurring medication that helps breakdown the lactose for a baby and within a few days of being on the drops Ollie was like a different baby. I couldn't get over the difference! Sitting him upright after feeds seemed to help a lot too.

Honestly, I know it doesn't seem like it but it WILL get better. I was crying constantly due to having such a "difficult" baby and now I barely remember it. I now have a gorgeous and hilarious 10 month old who laughs constantly!

My DS had mild reflux and colic, we switched to Cow and gate Comfort milk and it made such a difference from the very first bottle. His nighttime screaming stopped and he was a much happier baby. I also used carobel to thicken his milk and that managed his reflux. We were able to phase out the carobel around 5 months but kept him on his comfort milk until he was a year x
