We had refluxy LO due to CMPI and gluten intolerance (and still does - no signs of growing out of it yet!!).
Our midwife got us to raise the mattress in his cot at the head of the cot by putting a couple of folded towels under the mattress. We did baby wearing during the day to help LO sleep during the day so he wasn't overtired at bed time. As LO got older we also used colief drops because he would curl up into a little ball when screaming, raising his legs to his tum and getting more and more upset. It was heartbreaking and so difficult. I was fortunate enough to have DH there for support.
I also agree that colic is just a lazy diagnosis.
Even now at 2.5, DS's mattress is still raised to help with his reflux and he is on medication because he tries to claw his neck and chest out, leaving terrible scratch marks if we miss some dairy or gluten in his diet.
