hi everyone!!

im new to this!!

basically im having a problem with my gym, i signed up to a 12 month gym subscription with david lloyd in december, i discovered i was pregnant a couple of weeks later and they wont let me cancel my membership only postpone it for either 3 or 6 months which is no good for me.

i originally joined the gym to lose weight as im not comfortable but now im pregnant its a completely different story. I wouldnt mind doing light excercise but i am still suffering with morning sickness which lasts all day sometimes and really bad sciatica in my hips which makes it hard to walk let alone go to the gym!! I told them i would make more use of the gym after i have had the baby to help with weight loss but they wont postpone it for that length of time. I find it eally unfair as am paying £46 a month and im not allowed to use the steam room or the sauna or certain machines.

Has anybody else experienced problems? I hate paying for something im not using!!!

the people at the gym arent helping me at all. iv even thought about just cancelling the direct debit but dont want to get into trouble with debt collectors and wreck my credit rating :S :(

i would cancel it bc even if it does affect your credit report negatively you can attach a letter to your credit report with it stating why this was canceled and therefore sometimes creditors will have leniency with that. And I would also submit a letter to the owner of the gym stating why you have done that and attach that to your report as well.

And just maybe, you could even have your dr get something too, but thats not a must have or anything.

they wont let her cancel x

i dont know what you can do exept maybe beg and plead with the manager. hmmm

If you can get Dr to write something then they may let you cancel, but your Dr may not be prepared to or may charge you for doing so. Otherwise David Lloyd's attitude unfortunately is that a signed contract is a signed contract and they won't do anything about it, and your credit rating would be adversely affected if you just stopped paying. I had problems with them a couple of years ago when I tried to cancel my contract having been a member for longer than my original contract and was still made to give 3 months notice when I'd moved further from gym than was practical for going there (although according to them it wasn't far enough for them to have to do anything about cancelling my membership quicker)

yeah apparently if you get a doctors not saying its 'dangerous' or im not fit to excercise thats the only way i can cancel it.

i am going to doctors to see if he would agree to this, i dont care if i have to pay will be better than paying a few hundred for this gym subscription!!

xx

If you cancel the d/d hunni they will just set it up again under a different reference no.
I work in a bank and see it all the time.
When you sign you agree to that apparently.
Speak to ya doc,
good luck

I have the same problem with bannatynes! Unfortunately i just have to wait it out which is so frustrating as its money that could be spent on the baby! :(

Have you considered making use of your membership? Just because we're pregnant doesn't mean we can't work out. I see fit and buff preggers ladies all the time, jogging, lifting weights and being really fit. It's really inspirational. Not sure if the doctor would write a note to lie for you, especially since in most genercal cases doctors urge you to be active and healthy during a pregnancy. I know my doctor stresses how important it is for me to maintain an active lifestyle. If you're still in 1st tri I'm sure you'll start to feel better in 2nd tri and will be able to go to the gym like you wanted to. Unfortunately with gym memberships you do get locked into them.

Join the club (if youll pardon the pun) I joined Bannatynes in July to get fit for baby. I was pregnant by October, and am paying about £60 a month for a membership I dont use and havent used since October.

While I appreciate that I "can" use it, I have absolutely zero energy and the thought of going there in the evenings or weekends is just horrific. I wish I could use the spa or sauna but I cant.

I have family visiting in a couple of months and they have bought spa days for themselves so Ill be going there with them, and will book myself in for a couple of treatments (although Im waiting for them to tell me which ones I can actually have!) But apart from that, I will have a swim and dangle my legs in the jacuzzi, but thats about it!

Im considering it a lesson learnt. If I get my mojo back I will start going again, but at the moment I finish work at 5, and Im in bed by 8 at the latest. If I was to go to the gym, I would never see my OH.

I cant even postpone my membership - at least you have that option!

I intend to cancel in July. They dont have a creche and once baby is here my time will be even more precious. I will be running along the sea front for 30 mins, 3 times a week in the evenings, (once OH gets home) and taking plenty of walks in the sunshine (while he is at work) with baby.

Can you freeze the membership for 3 months until you're (assuming) feeling better, then use it through the rest of your pregnancy & freeze it for another 3 months?

I stopped going to the gym for a few months because I was so exhausted & nauseous but now that I'm feeling better I'm going again. I just paid for it the months I didn't use it even though don't have a contract because my membership is only $10/month (hooray, Planet Fitness! :haha:).

I used to work for David Lloyd. With who did you speak about a cancelling? Was it a receptionist? These girls can't do anything just doing what are told, even membership or sales adviser won't do anything. Let me tell you what you could try.
Get the letter from the doctor and ask for a meeting with a General Manager. Do not say to the receptionist what it is regarding of. I know it's bad, but try to sound very upset and serious. Speak loud and don't be nice.
Then explain to the manager face to face (make sure other people can't hear this conversation otherwise he or she will have to follow the club rules) and ask first about cancelling and then about possibly freezing for a year. In most of the cases they will do it.
I used to work for them 3 years ago so unless something has changed it should work. I noticed that if you are nice to them the receptionist will never put your message forward or try to help. Every 15 mins they have someone with similar problem and only the "tough" one (loud, confident, rude) achieve what they need. Sad...

Sorry for language mistakes still learning ;-)

Oh and no matter what don't cancel your direct debit because you will be straight away harassed by debt collectors who will add their fees on top of the membership fee.

If nothing works you could transfer your membership to a friend.
