Hi everyone

I'm looking for some advice. As the title suggests I had my HSG today. It was VERY painful and I actually fainted - how embarrassing! I normally have what I think is a high pain threshold. Anyway... The nurse showed me the images and the left tube was dilated with no spillage, and she wasn't sure about the right but that one also looked abnormal. She mentioned hydrosalpinx but I need to wait for the radiologist to review the image before I get an official diagnosis. My follow up is a week tomorrow.

So being the google adding that I am I've been trying to find out what this might mean for me. From what I've foud my chances of conceiving naturally are slim to none. The hydrosalpinx would make sense to me as Ever since I came off the pill 14 months ago I get excessive watery discharge for the majority of my cycle (sorry if tmi) - I read this is common with hydrosalpinx.

So has anyone else had the same problem? If so what were your options and outcomes etc? All other test results for me and DH were normal.

Thanks in anticipation xx

I have no advice, but sorry to hear about your bad news. Lots of luck on your journey x

I'm really sorry to hear this, I just wanted to send you some love and support x

Sorry hun. I just had an HSG done, and while it was way more painful than I was expecting, everything was clear. I have heard sometimes they can unblock your tubes, but sometimes I think they suggest IVF as the next step.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Hoping to get some further info soon so I know what my options are. Still in shock, expected all to be fine!

Nevernormal: glad your results were good, fingers crossed for a BFP for you soon now, baby dust xx

I'm so sorry. News like that is devastating. I hope you can get more information and begin to process it. I found that the unknowns were the worst part of getting a big diagnosis like that.

Hi Hun, I had my HSG 2 weeks ago and although mine wasn't painful, I got news similar to yours. The report read right tube free spill, left tube hydro but then eventually showed spill, then later right tube got dilated. Very confusing because it's like "good news you have spill" but "bad news you have hydro left tube more than the right". My ob told me to try 2 natural cycles before I see an RE who he thinks will direct me right to IVF. We didn't want to wait 2 months so we have started going for RE appointments to weigh our options. We are still ttc naturally during this process but I don't know how much luck we will have. It is so emotionally draining. Please feel free to private message me as I would love to share together our findings and our next steps.

hi Claire, i had my HSG last month and it was extremely painful, i screamed and normally am ok with pain.
The report showed 1 tube blocked with no spillage, the other one open. So i had a laparoscopy and hysterscopy last week which showed the tubes are not at all blocked and that there are no tubal problems.
I was told that sometimes your tubes go into spasm with the pain and appear closed on the xray. i would think you would be referred for a lap and dye to properly diagnose and flush. At the same time, they also do laser treatment and push gas through to try and open up the tubes if they are actually blocked.
Good luck

If you research hsg it says the test itself can make your tubes spasm and appear closed. So they are by no means a definitive test.

As you can see from my signature, I had hsg too. What the doctor who performed it told me and what my own fs told me about the results were 2 different things. One said left tube wasn't appearing on screen, so it's totally blocked, but after studying xrays my fs said she could see it but there was no spill so it may he blocked at top.

The reason I'm mentioning that is you may have a different report once you go for follow up as a second opinion can bring different views.

From what i understand, the hsg is only good for saying if a tube is def open as it will show spill, but if it doesn't show up then it doesn't necessarily mean it's not open, it may mean it spasmed, it sits further back so didn't show as clearly or possibly the dye was more diluted in the water/oil base so didn't show. It doesn't mean it is 100% positively blocked. Hope that helps.

X

Hi, I am so sorry you have had this bad news. I have had similar news to deal with this month. Firstly, I don't know how you ladies coped having this procedure done awake, I too always thought I had a high pain threshold but had a lap and dye done last monday and was in absolute agony afterwards.

My tube is blocked also, I have been told IVF with ICSI is my only option, in a way I am glad to finally have answers but also devastated at the news I will not be able to conceive naturally. I really feel for you. I hope you get some answers at your follow up appt and they can tell you where to go from here. :hugs:

Thank you so much everyone for these replies. It's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this. :hugs: You're right it is such an emotional journey. It's so hard to keep the faith knowing your chances aren't as good when being advised to continue trying naturally.

I've managed to bring my follow up appointment forward to next Wednesday and my specialist will give me more details about the results then. It's all I can think about and I'm sure you're all in the same boat.

Hope1409 - thanks for the words of support, I would love to keep in touch over PM and chat about our findings.

I'll keep you all updated when I know more, can't stop googling to try and learn more but I know I should really wait to get a more definitive answer before worrying myself any further.

Thanks again

My appt next weds too!! I hope it goes well for both of us. I know what you mean it is on my mind constantly too x

Well it's bad news for me. Bilateral hydrosalpinges, tubes occluded distally. Guess this means saplingectomy and IVF is only option now. Hope you other girlies have better news x

Claire, so sorry hun. Please try not to forget the amazing success rates of ivf there are so many ladies on here who got lucky first time. I do know exactly how you are feeling please pm me if you need to talk x :hugs:

Thank you. I'm feeling a bit better today, had an appointment with my specialist and I might not have to have surgery. She's referred me for IVF today so the ball's rolling. She thinks I've got a really good chance with IVF as it's just my plumbing so to speak!

Hope your appointment goes well on Wednesday :flow:

So glad you're feeling better hun :hugs:

Thanks, I will let you know how I get on, v excited eeek! :happydance:

Hi Claire

I just had my Hsg test on Thursday and the Tech stated to me that my tubes were both open but they are dilated so I'm not sure what's going on. He didn't say I had hydrosalpinx but I meet with my OBGYN on Wednesday to discuss my results.

hi there, sorry can't help... adding that the HSG was crazy painful! I felt like my insides were going to explode... not fun. Glad it's over eh?
