I have heard so much conflicting advice on this!

But I Really need to dye my hair I have quite a few 'silver' hairs and they are really noticable!!

Is it safe to use hair dye when pregnant and are there certain ones to avoid? I usually use Loreal Ferea (sp)

Hair dyes are safe during pregnancy. The main thing is that sometimes the hormones can interfere with how the colour comes out and you might not get the same colour that you usually do with the same product.

Id like to know the answer to this as I am really fed up with my hair at the minute and wanna treat myself and go down to the hairdressers and get it fully made over, new colour and new style
xx

i asked my hairdresser who is also pregnant and she said its fine it just might might colour a bit different to normal.xxx

Definately Yes! I color my hair now and did while pregnant with my 2 boys and they are very strong and healthy. My gf is really grey and has to dye her hair every 6 weeks and she just had a healthy baby girl. It's important for us ladies to feel and look beautiful during this time (when our bodies mutat...lol)

i did, last week, they did it horribly but thats not the point lol
i asked the hairdressers and my midwife friend who both said it was fine but sometimes they say avoid it in the 1st tri? xx

My hairdresser said it was also fine, but to echo everyone else, there are no guarantees about how the colour will turn out!!

Mmm this is an interesting thread, i've been told the opposite, i really wanted to dye my hair as its starting to look a mess and i was told by both midwife and hairdresser to wait until after birth, i guess everyone has different opinions. xxx

i've heard a lot of conflicting stories about this topic as well. when i did my hair the other week, i just put in some highlights and didn't get the dye on my scalp.

I've had highlights once this pregnancy and am going in next week, just for highlights again. I didn't get anything done during the 1st trimester - I think this is the time to avoid it. But as myfirst said, highlights don't touch your scalp and I believe that they are considered a better option than full-on dye.

Lol I don't care if it doesn't come out the exact colour it normally does, as long as it covers up the silver ones that are there!! lol
My hair is dark anyway, I usually use the plum colour so I think I might just buy some and go over to mums - if I do it myself I will get it all over the place! Lol

I think it's fine once you are passed 12 weeks.
The chang in hormones may mean that the colour may not take to your hair the way it should.

Hi hun!
I asked my hairdresser when i was 6 weeks pregnant, and she said it's absolutley fine! I dyed mine that week and everything been ok!
x

I dyed my hair a few weeks ago. I found it grew out a lot quicker than normal and the colour was coming out almost everytime I washed! Oops! :p
I dyed it like a mahogony browny red colour.. lol!

PLUS, do you see all these celebs walking around with huge roots when they're pregnant? No. :p! So go for gold and dye your hair! Just make sure you open a window :) xxx

This article has some good advice, much of it already mentioned by others on this thread! :)

My hairdresser is one of my best friends so trust her completely when she says it's safe. She was more worried about doing a skin test as i might become a bit more sensitive but that would only affect me not bub. xxx

MAKE SURE YOU DO A SKIN TEST!

i have my hair dyed at saks and i always have the same colour. i asked my hairdresser if i could carry on having it dyed and she said yes, but insisted i had a skin test the day before as she said it's not uncommon for women to develop an allergy because of the change in their hormones.

thank god i listened to her!

she put the dye behind my ear and within 10 minutes it started to burn. it stopped burning but when i woke up in the morning i found it had actually taken off all of the skin from behind my ear, soooooo painful!

it's not put me off dying my hair at all, we just found a different kind that i didn't react to. but for god's sake, please everyone skin test! i've never had a reaction before in my life and i've been dying my hair monthly for 10 years! xx

Same here, im starting to look old!! I think chemicals whether perm or semi perm dyes may cause a reaction due to the skins sensitivity during pregnancy, so that maybe why they say no during pregnancy even if you are not allergic to hair dyes, theres always a first time they say.
I think Henna would be fine, its natural, but would check with midwife first.
