Half Siblings - Look alike??

Hi all

I haven't got any half Brothers or Sisters and I don't actually know anyone in my circles that do so I wanted out how likely it is for them to resemble eachother?

I am intrigued about whether my daughter will look like my stepson? I know its always a gamble and there are so many genes involved but do any of you have any half siblings?

My stepson looks completely like his Dad, not his Mum, it is a very strong look on my OH's side - they are Turkish Cypriot and all the family have the same eyes and features - stepson is a complete spit of the family. Wondering if my daughter will follow - my OH has a stronger look than my family.

I look nothing like my half brother (it feels weird calling him that because we're sooo close, and have such a great relationship) but we both look like our Dad's. In your case though I think your baby could end up looking like your stepson and your OH because it sounds like they have very dominant features.

I know, sorry it doesn't sound nice saying half does it! We don't call her half Sister to our stepson, it is just "your baby Sister". But just for the purpose of this post!

I think you maybe right, baby may take their look over mine as it is a dominant one. You just never know though - she may be all me!

I have 2 half brothers and a half sister (weird calling them that as we all grew up together and are extremely close)! my sister and I do look similar. We both have traits from our mom and look a lot like her.

Cool that you look alike. I guess there will always be similarities in siblings whether full or from different Mums/Dads. Exciting to see the mix x

It's so weird to think of siblings as half! My half brother looks a lot my sister and me. We all look a lot like my mom, so he didn't really get much from his father in the looks department.

My OH's first son looks very like Eamon. I admit it is weird, I look at Eamon's face and see DSS looking back at me sometimes OH has seen it too and while he says it feels a little weird to him, it doesn't outright spook him like it does me! It's gonna sound strange but you don't expect another woman's child to look so much like your own even though logistically you know it must be possible as they have the same father. I'm mostly used to it now though even though lots of people have gone to/do accidentally call E by DSS's name and that shocks me (his dad especially!)

My sister remarried after her first two kids, then had two more. It's funny, neither of the full siblings look anything alike, but oldest and youngest DS are extremely alike.

It can be hard to tell them apart when looking at pictures from the same age bracket.

my half sis looks the spit of me, but my half bro doesn't at all (they have the same dad, mines dif), but the female looks gene in my family is very strong. Me, my sis, mum, aunty and nan all look very similar

My OH has two half sisters and they look nothing alike. He looks very much like his dad (well, not now, but looking back at a picture of his dad from years ago he does).

I look a lot like my biological dad but I have my mom's nose. My 2nd youngest sister looks a lot like my mom but is taller. My youngest sister looks a little like my mom and a little bit more like me. There are definite traits we all share (dark hair, dark eyes) but we all look a bit different too. They share the same dad and don't really look any more alike.

Me and my two half sisters have some simular traits but it is hard to tell just buy looking at us that we are related. i think it depends on how strong the parents features are. Thier fathers features are much stronger then our mothers features, so they look more like thier father.

Great response, thanks. Yeah I can imagine being a bit freaked out if my dd and dss look really similar! The odd thing is, dss has a little Sister from his Mummy that looks nothing like him at all! She took all her Dad's looks. It will be really strange for dss' Mum if my daughter looks the spit of him won't it! Although as you say logically they are genes from the same Father, it is still freaky and fascinating! x

I think certain strong traits can be the same.. My OH has two daughters by different women and they both have his exact nose and eyes but everything else is different (height, hair, weight,etc)

Me and my sister don't look anything like our half brother. We all have a similar birthmark on our arm though.

thats funny! So the resemblance really can be that strong then. I'm getting really intrigued now. Only 3 months to wait now to find out!x

My mum had two daughters from a previous marriage then me & my brother. Myself & my oldest sister look alike & are very similar personality wise, we both look like my mum. My other sister & my younger brother are very alike personality wise but both take their looks from their dad's.

Its very strange talking about my sisters like that because even tho i have known my whole life that they have a different dad & i have met him a few times, it was my dad that brought them up as his own.

My eldest daughter said something the other day about 'half-sister' and I said please don't you ever call her that, yes she has a different dadda but she'll belong to all of us and we'll all love her just the same as every other family member

Half siblings share the same amount of genetic material as uncles/aunts and nieces/nephews, or grandparents and grandchildren. So there should be about the same kind of variance in how different they look. That means they could be anywhere from extremely similar to barely looking related (I can think of examples of both of those among me and my siblings and our aunts, uncles, and grandparents -- maybe you can in your family too). Of course, if your stepson looks like his father, then your daughter is more likely to look related to him.
