Hi,

My DH and I have been trying for #2 now for about 4 months now with no success. I was reading a little bit about Vitex/Chasteberry and was curious if anyone has tried it and it worked for them?

I was having semi regular periods since I stopped breastfeeding DS in April but haven't had one since July 17th now and I'm not pregnant so I don't know what is up with me! I was very regular before getting pregnant, every 34 days or so and now I feel defective! I haven't been doing OPK so I'm not sure when/if I am ovulating and thought maybe I would try them but since I've not had a period in a long time I don't know where to start.

Any advice or help/suggestions would be appreciated! :flower:

There was a forum on here from a while back with a LOT of successes using vitex - it does help regulate AF :) I just started using it to help me (and my future bean lol) so we'll see how it goes. It also works well if you take folic acid and B6 with it (from what i've read.. and believe me ive read a LOT).

Good luck!! :)

I just barely started taking b6 because I heard good things about that also. But I really haven't been taking it long enough for it to make a difference. I also take a prenatal vitamin everyday. But I haven't heard about folic acid. How much would you take of each? Should you take the prenatal vitamins also?

I will have to look up the forum about vitex from a while back. Thanks!

There is a VERY helpful book about the menstrual cycle and supplements to regulate. Its called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility." $15 or so on Amazon. If you haven't already read it, it is worth it!

Also, fertilityfriend.com is a good resource!

Vitex can also reduce prolactin, which may still be high since you were recently breastfeeding. High prolactin can throw off your cycle, so vitex should help. good luck!

Can I ask cau you start taking vitex if you not know where your cycle is.
I too have had no period and am not pregnant if I take vit ex do I not have to us it on cd 3-7 :/ which then I Wudnt be able too

when TTC you should always take prenatals, especially since your body might still be depleted from your previous pregnancy. :)

As for the Vitex, I have terribly long cycles and suspected low progesterone among other things. I started it July 1st, and got a period on July 25th! A small miracle.
Today I am apparently 3DPO, so it seems that Vitex also helped me ovulate!
It definitely works. Just started taking B 50 complex also and excited to see what the combination does!

I'm taking this too And seems to have helped . Does any one no if you carry on taking it till you get bfp ?

You can start taking Vitex whenever you want and carry on into your pregnancy, but stop sometime in the 2nd trimester. It can interfere with breastfeeding.
What vitex does is support the feedback loops between all your various fertility hormones. It takes a long time to work; I've been taking it for at least 9 months and FINALLY just had a confirmed with temps O. I would really encourage anyone who is really interested in Vitex to read Hethir Rodriguez stuff on Natural Fertility Info, and also to read the Amazon reviews for more real women's stories.

i started taking vitex at the beginning of the month to help to get my periods back but so far i havent had any luck, thought it may of been abit quicker, but will carry on and see what happens. i did get a positive ov test the second day of taking it, so who knows....

Sorry to cut and paste. This info came with the vitex liquid I used-- explains it pretty well i thought?

Vitex Agnus Castus Hormone Balance

Greenridge Vitex agnus castus, more commonly known as chaste tree. Natural hormone balance for women. An effective herb for regulating female hormones and may assist with the relief of menstrual symptoms. An important herb for helping to balance female hormones by regulating the pituitary gland. Helps with a variety of hormonal disorders especially those caused by excess oestrogen. Needs to be taken for at least 3 months. Ideal for after having a baby, to help balance hormone levels up again, for those with an erratic cycle (break through bleeding, spotting and a short cycle - say getting your period from day 20-25, rather than on day 28) and for PMT. Do not use in cases of high progesterone, as this herb can help to naturally increase progesterone levels. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Common Uses

Hormone imbalances, PMS, cramping, fluid retention, mood swings, depression, tender swollen breasts, hormonal weight gain, bloatedness, hormonal headaches, excessive bleeding, loss of libido, hot flushes, night sweats, thinning of vaginal mucosa, alternative to HRT, hormonal acne, increases progesterone and luteinizing hormone production, creates normal balance between estrogen and progesterone, normalizes heavy, frequent or non existent menstrual flow, help reduce prolactin levels which may be a contributor to infertility.
Suggested Dosage

Adult take 2 ml in the morning, in a small quantity of water or juice. Shake well before use. Do not take erratically. To produce a regulatory effect, this herb MUST be taken every day of the month (even when you have your period) Do not miss a day, once started. We suggest starting on Day 1, the 1st day of true bleeding.
Health Information

Vitex or Chaste Tree is a hormone regulating herb used especially for, but not restricted to, women. Indications include menstrual disorders stemming from estrogen/progesterone imbalance. Researchers have been investigating Vitex for over 30 years in the UK and Germany and it is clear that the berries have a distinct effect on the reproductive system. This includes PMS/PMT and estrogen related infertility. Studies also indicate Vitex may be useful to stimulating both production and secretion of breast milk. Since there are no reported harmful effects, Vitex should be considered a first line treatment before hormone therapies are undertaken. It may also be considered in peripheral hormone imbalance conditions such as acne and premenstrual herpes simplex. Many women with menstrual cycle irregularities are not producing enough progesterone during the 2nd half of their cycle. This means that estrogen continues to be the dominant hormone. This can lead to a shortening of the luteal phase, by as much as 50%. When this occurs, women can suffer from premenstrual syndrome, a lack of periods, infertility and also too frequent or heavy periods. Vitex, which does not contain hormones, acts to correct the deficiency of progesterone by actually working on the pituitary gland - the gland that produces the regulatory hormones influencing progesterone and estrogen production. Vitex influences the pituitary to increase the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), the hormone responsible for increasing progesterone secretion during the luteal phase. This results in a normal balance between estrogen and progesterone. Another problem affecting many women with "luteal phase defect" is the over production of another pituitary hormone known as prolactin. High levels of prolactin during the late stages of the luteal phase can contribute to breast tenderness and pain as well as infertility. Vitex has been shown to actually reduce prolactin secretion in women overproducing it during their menstrual cycle. Used for an average of 3 months in a 1 a day dosage, vitex has led to a normalisation of mid-luteal phase progesterone levels and lengthening of the luteal phase.
Ingredients

Each 1ml contains Vitex agnus castus (chaste tree) extract equivalent to 200mg dry berries. Contains non-active alcohol (ethanol) 450mcL/ml. No added gluten, lactose, yeast, sugar, artificial flavours or sweeteners.
Safety Information

Keep out of reach of children. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare professional. Do not take if pregnant of breastfeeding. Contains alcohol. Note from Leanne: A large percentage of women notice increased breast tenderness the first month they take this herb. This happens because of the regulatory effect this herb has on the pituitary gland, the gland that regulates prolactin levels. Because of this action, many women notice this initially.

I can't wait to see what this does after a few months of consistent use!

Yeah, seems to effect everyone differently though- like I read that if you don't have low progesterone it can cause all the symptoms you get with too much progesterone. It is weird, alot of people say 'it will either work great with you or it wont' that doesn't make a lot of sense though- there has to be a reason doesn't there?

hi,

i took vitex and it really helped to regulate my cycles for me. i took the drops which absorb much better but it is very important to take them regularly as this is a herb and needs time to work.

i used vitex for about 3 months and the month i stopped vitex i got pregnant.. ironic but still helped allot with getting a regular cycle and for sure worth a try!! also considder opk's... they are a real help!

good luck xx

I just wanted to add my story about vitex. My husband and I were NTNP for a few months, then started TTC for a few months. I started charting, and found out my Luteal phase was only 7 and 10 days (with spotting 2 days before) and I never got a true positive OPK. So I started vitex (1000mg/day in a liquicap) and upped my dose of B vitamins to 2 time a day. My temps seemed to go up, and I got a nearly pos opk around CD 22, then my temps went up a bit, but not drastically. Even though FF gave me crosshairs, I wasn't convinced I had ovulated, as I didn't get my sore BBs. So I kept taking OPKs every day and lo and behold, on CD 33 I got a REALLY positive OPK and I was getting EWCM (which I have never had!). We BD and I ovulated on CD35 with a VERY clear temp shift, much higher than I ever had before. I got a clear BFP on 10dpo. :happydance:

For me, I feel vitex worked. Even though it delayed ovulation, I feel that I had a MUCH stronger ovulation than previously, and I feel it is the reason I am pregnant. Since my BFP, I've weaned down, started taking it every other day, every third, and now I'm off. Hope this little one sticks! Good luck to you!

Here's my weird chart this month, in case you are interested.
