Have your toddlers had chips/crisps? If so, what kind? Did they like it? Do you have a problem keeping them away from the chips/crisps if you have them out or if you're visiting somewhere that has them?

My DS is turning 2 in a little over a week and DH wants to give him a little bag of chips. I'm sure DS would love it, but we haven't given him anything like that yet and I feel hesitant to give in now. I'd really rather wait a year  I'm concerned that once he's had them, we'll never be able to go anywhere without him throwing a fit if he doesn't get any.

So what about your toddlers? Have they had them? How did it go?

thanks :flower:

Coralie has crisps. She still favours carrots and peas most of the time :haha: She has wotsits, quavers... anything soft really as I worry about the crisps cutting the roof of her mouth or something silly. That being said though, she has had normal crisps as she helps herself from the cupboards sometimes

I have pretty much given both mine crisps of some sorts (wotsits, quavers, that sort of thing) since they turned about a year. I don't give them the whole packet though - well, Earl gets a small snack size pack in his lunchbox for school, on days out or at home at lunchtime sometimes - but most of the time I share a packet between the 3 of us on their plates.

I can't say that Earl has ever 'thrown a fit' because he wants them. They're handy to have as an additional snack if we're in the car as they're not overly messy and keep him quiet lol. To me it's just another food stuff and is part of a balanced diet. They also have plenty of fruit and veg, healthy cooked meals, but also the odd chocolate biscuit so it's all things in moderation.

Yes, both kids have had crisps occasionally since 6 months old (we did BLW). Neither of them throw a fit for any kind of food as we've never made anything forbidden so they accept them as just normal food. The only thing I do is check the salt content and if they have more than one or two, make sure I adjust the rest of their food accordingly so they're not getting too much.

Yup but he was already 2. At 1st he used to get a small packet every few days, but now it's around once a month (he doesn't ask for it & he prefers popcorn & nuts). He likes Doritos & lay's (the baked ones)

Both of mine have oven chips once a week or fortnight - but I only buy the ones which are JUST potato with 3% oil or whatever. no salt or seasonings. i dont buy crisps unless its a real treat for OH and I - because we'd scoff the lot! But the kids have Organix baby "crisps" and they like Marmite toddler rice cakes as well as Organix apple/banana/raspberry ones. They occasionally get a quaver if we go to my sisters (her house is crisp heaven).

I'm a bit anal about what goes into them I'll admit, so I check the ingredients on EVERYTHING for salt content, msg, and any words as long as my arm that i dont understand!

DS1 sometimes has the toddler maze snack crisps made by organix with a sandwich but one bag tends to last a while since he only has a few at a time.

Maria has crisps sometimes. She likes nachos so I give the broken ones that are too small for me to dip in salsa :haha: She does demand crisps whenever she sees a bag but I just tell her she can't have them because they belong to OH, she usually falls for that.

Yes. Fin's had all kinds: soft maize snacks like wotsits (Cheetos) etc, crackers like Chex Mix, "proper" crisps like Walkers (Lays) and Nachos too. H got on fine with them all but Lays and nachos have only been allowed in the last year.

Amelia has had some but not Lays yet. She has eaten nachos though. That girl is a dustbin

Both can give or take them though. We never buy them when out, simply because I always prepare diffemt snacks to take with us. Sometimes it will be part of a meal. Like here in the UK a common lunch will be sandwich, crisps, fruit, yoghurt and maybe soething sweet like a chcollate biscuit. So they tend to only have them in that kind of instance or with Amelia... whenever she scavenged them from somene lol xx

Yup she's had both, and nope she has never had a tantrum for them at home or otherwise. Even if I say no and give her something else she is fine. Freya has organix ones occasionly if were out and she gets stroppy, once she starts eating properly ill let her have them too. Everything I cook is homemade so I don't see any harm in a packet of crisps a couple of times a week or chips with nanny on a day out x

I have given them to my daughter, and I have given my daughter a bite of everything I eat, just so she can have a taste of it. I really don't hold back. We eat healthy meals so a treat for a snack never hurts. She never throws tantrums about not having chips. She can open our pantry and see the junkfood, and I will say no she can't eat it, and she is ok with that, and closes the pantry and happily eats her fruit or other healthy snacks she has available.

I try not to keep potato chips around the house because if they are around we'll all gorge ourselves on them lol! LO is no different, he's had chips and then freaks out and wants more more more. It's really terrible, we can't let him see them lol. Nobody I know serves potato chips when we go to their house so it's not so much a worry.

My DD is 15months and she often has the organix baby 'crisps', prob about 2-3x a week (not a whole bag! just a few). It is usually part of lunch e.g. after sandwitch etc or for a snack in the car. She often has rice cakes too, prob about 5x a week but I don't see that as a bad snack tbh. She doesn't demand them but her language is still developing. She does understand 'all gone' though (even if there are some left...hehe).
Re chips, she has had a couple of ours when we are out and about but we dont really have them at home. I tried making homemade ones yesterday (healthy) and she refused them so it's not a problem really.
I dont really see a problem letting them try things as long as it doesn't become expected as such. The baby crisps and really not that bad so I stick to them.

Hi, I have given my DD a try of crisps - if we're out and about and DF or SD has some she can have a taste if she likes. My view is I don't want her to think certain things are forbidden as she grows up, so I would rather be open to letting her try lots of different things. My and DF took SD to McDonalds and DD was staing at SD's happy meal, so she tried a chip, didn't like it and sat with her carrot sticks instead...I think it's an important lesson to be allowed everything in moderation. She has never thrown a fit becuase she has been denied food she has seen.

Sometimes I have tortilla chips and I'll usually give LO a couple. She isn't obsessed though and she doesn't get mad when I put them away. Hopefully it will stay that way! I've also given her a couple fries at a restaurant, but usually she's happier if I can get her some fruit. She's not too interested in junk food.

Oh yes. Marley has had chips before - he loves them with lots of "red sawuss" (ketchup) haha. He's had fresh chips, oven chips, McDonalds chips and chippy chips. He loves them all! He does eat a varied diet btw but I don't see a problem eaten in moderation.

Whenever I have a day off work and its nice we go to the local chippy and sit in the park eating them. Our little ritual :)

Oooh, he also loves a packet of crisps. He has specific favourites (Monster Munch, Wotsits, Pom-Bears, Quavers, Hula-Hoops). He has more of a savoury tooth than sweet tooth, as he hardly eats chocolate so would happily eat his way through a packet of crisps instead, which doesn't bother me at all.

Our chips are your crisps.... Both of my kids have had them. Megan doesn't like potato chips ( like lays) or nacho type chips ( tostitos or similar). She hates doritos. She does however love cheetos and any puffy type cheeto or puffed corn type thing. We buy baked cheetos that she has once in a while here at home. And we tend to eat out subway more than other fast food type places and she will share a bag of cheetos with dh and I. So small bag split 3 ways. We don't give Jordan cheetos yet.. Too crunchy for my liking. Jordan has just had a few small tastes of dhs chips. She seems to like them.

Not a big deal in our house.

Yes DS has had them during parties. We don't usually keep them in the house so he doesn't ask for them here. He likes them but not as much as other treats.. He knows we have cookies in the house so he often asks for cookies! He asked for a cookie for breakfast today but didn't get one :)

My FIL fed LO a whole bag of skips the first time I left LO with them at 14 months. Otherwise, she only gets a few toddler puffs or crackers at snack time.

Yes thy have them as a treat sometimes and both love them a bit too much x
