Hi girls,

I am having my first HSG/Hysterosalpingogram in October and I am a little nervous. I am doing some testing before I will be able to do IUI and this is just one of the several tests that the DR wants me to do. I was just wondering how other girl's experiences went that also had the HSG done. I was also wondering if anybody knew or were girls that had the HSG done and than got pregnant after because it unblocked their tubes. I have a girlfriend that said she did the HSG because she wasnt getting pregnant and than she did get pregnant right away following the HSG because it unblocked her tubes. Any info that you ladies would like to share would be highly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!!!

I searched on youtube about for HSG procedures vids, the comments there were scary.
Many said it hurts. One said it hurt so much, the nurses had to hold her down so that she didn't move around so much. One person said it didn't hurt at all. I guess it hurts if your tubes are blocked.
One person said she got pregnant right away the next cycle.

Many saying you should take 2-4 Tylenol pills before you go for your appointment, to numb the pain.

I'm going to have my 1st IUI this month. Natural. No meds.
I wanted to do HSG first, but the doctor seemed to think it's unnecessary, since I ovulate and have AF regularly. I also healthy overall.
She thinks the problem is hostile cervical mucus. I guess that's the most basic reason for not being able to conceive.

Thanks for the information hun.... Good luck to you for your IUI, I hope you get your BFP!!! :dust: :dust:

I had one for the first time earlier this year and I was pretty nervous. But it wasn't too bad - it hurt like a bad period during the procedure and then moderate cramping for a few hours afterwards. Absolutely take 3-4 ibuprofin before to help with the afterwards cramps. I had no blockage - Dr was shocked at how quick the dye went thru - so obviously it didn't help me get pg since blocked tubes aren't my issue. Hope it does the trick for you - I've heard loads of success stories after HSG - even my Dr said it helps many women :flower:

Good Luck with your HSG I am having mine on Tuesday, starting to get nervous, more because of what they might find :(

Thanks for your responses girls. :flower:

@Mrshowley, Good luck with your HSG, I think that is one of my biggest fears about it as well, imagining what they "might" find..... I got my fingers crossed that both of us have clear tubes and get a clean bill of health.... :hugs:

Hi ladies I had my hcosy yesterday (I think it's the same thing) and it was fine. A bit uncomfortable but over v quickly. Luckily there were no blockages so hopefully I will get my bfp soon! having IUI soon.

U will be fine, its over in mins and gets u onto the next step of this fertility journey

Good luck with IUI, fingers crossed :-) xx

The HSG wasn't too bad. It's very much like a pap smear.....a little bit of pain during and some cramping after. Not a pleasant experience but not the worst.

Good Luck!

OK....I hope I don't scare you with my story....to be brief though....mine was VERY PAINFUL!! Here is my story...

They had me lay on a very flat table (hurt my back) and the doctor showed me the little stick we was going to put inside me and how the process was going to work. I already kinda knew about it from the research I did prior. Some women said it was just minor period cramping, and some said very painful they cried! So, I was very nervous...

Anywho, it is much like a pap smear as far as opening your vaginal canal to see your cervix (which I was told mine was tilted to the left). He had to clamp my cervix because of that (that I barely felt). Then he inserted the stick/catheter (again, barely felt) through my cervix. At this point I was thinking "this isn't going to be as bad as I thought." Boy was I wrong!!

The minute he began to inject the dye....I started screaming in pain! It was like someone was ripping my uterus apart! At that moment, the nurse had to grab my hands above my head (I am laying down) and pull be back to get under the "real time xray". I felt him increase the pressure of the dye 3 TIMES! Each time it was even worse pain and I screamed louder. Granted, it only lasted all of 2 minutes, but was the longest most painful 2 minutes of my life lol. After it was done, I was crying and shaking so bad, the nurse was terrified lol. She said she had never seen a women in so much pain during and after the HSG test. Poor girl...

I curled up into a fetal position after it was done and BARELY was able to walk to the bathroom afterwards. UGH....I can still feel it til this day sometimes haha. A day or 2 after the test, I started getting this weird gunk coming out of me. Best way to describe it was like greyish wet clumps of toilet paper/soft mushy tartar. WEIRD!! I am assuming that was my "blockages" from my tubes.

That being said though....I did conceive that month, but didn't stick. No luck since then though (June 2011). So, YES it was painful, but it was worth it. I hope yours was no where near as painful as mine was, yet on the other hand, the more it hurts, that means you have a blockage. Best of luck to you!!

Thanks again for sharing your experiences with me girls...:flower:

@Winter, I am sorry you had such a painful experience. :hugs: I appreciate you being honest with me and you havent made me nervous. At least it cleaned out your tubes so you can have a better chance of conceiving. I am sorry about your recent loss. :hugs: Good luck and baby dust to you, I hope you get a BFP soon. :dust: :dust:

But, like you said it will be worth it, to either find out if there is a problem or not, or to unblock my tubes if they have a minor blockage. At least than I can figure out what I need to do next.

From what you ladies on this thread have said and on another thread I have going about this topic as well it sounds like if you have blocked tubes the HSG hurts like hell, and if you dont and your tubes are clear it is only minor cramping.

I am going to take some pretty strong pain meds before the procedure and I am probably going to take a volume or something to keep me nice and calm during the procedure as well, I am trying to remind myself that it is going to be worth it and to try not to get so nervous, but of course that is easier said than done....

I had a tubal reversal back in 2007 so it was recommended to have the HSG to make sure the tubes were clear ,
so I had my HSG in 2009 and was extremely stressed at what the outcome would be, but everything went fine.

first they had me change into a hospital type gown then they brought me into the room they do the HSG's in and had me lay on a flat table with a small pillow under my bum , then after talking to me for a while the doctor slowly inserted the catheter into my cervix this caused serious AF type cramps then she told me to breathe deep breaths in and out and it reminded me of being in labor then she very slowly injected the dye while her and I watched the TV screen ,we saw the right tube spill the dye straight away then she had me very gently move a tad bit to my left and pushed the dye a bit harder I had a light dizzy spell so she wanted to stop but I said no please continue then we saw the left tube slowly spill the dye.

she then commented the TR doctor did a excellent job in repairing my tubes. then she quickly removed the catheter and had me slowly sit up and told me to BD lots because she has seen lots of girls get pregnant after having the HSG done. I went home extremely happy and feeling like I was dreaming , I did have mild cramps that lasted all evening after the HSG and alot of stuff coming out of me so its recommended you bring a maxi pad with you to the HSG ,the stuff coming out looks and feels like maple syrup.

I think HSG experiences can be alot different depending on what doctor is performing the HSG ,some can be more gentle then others. and this is why some women are in more pain then others. also if there is a blockage there will be more pain . Hoping your HSG outcome is a good one.:flower:

I had an HSG done and got pregnant straight away. I did find it pretty painful but as soon as it got bad it was over. They didnt find any blockages which I was shocked at as I thought I got preg after because they had cleared something but no, all totally clear. Hope it is as successful for you!

Thanks again for sharing your experiences with me girls....:flower:

I hope I am one of the lucky ladies that gets pregnant right after the HSG!!!

I really wish I had of discovered this board before I had my HSG done. I wasn't even remotely aware of what it was. My experience was very uncomfortable.

When I went in for the first HSG my DH was gone on a training mission. So I did the test alone. When he finished with the procedure he showed me the video and I just started balling my eyes out. I was alone, with a Dr that I didn't exactly like, learning finally what was wrong with me.

Then after 2 months of being put off by him, DH and I finally went in for the procedure which I'm going to assume is also HSG(after reading about it further on this board) where they wheeled me back and gave me an IV that didn't totally put me out but helped with the pain. Once he started doing whatever he was doing down there there was a sensation that I can only ASSUME was the tubes popping open? I'm not sure. Once I got back to my room the cramping started. And I finally fell asleep for a little while and once I got up to go to the bathroom there was a lot of blood. (TMI)

Thank you for the stories ladies!
I am scheduled for my HSG on 10-3... a little nervous because I may have to go alone.

With my HSG a few years ago, I remember that just about when I started to think "holy crap this hurts" it was over. Literally, the dye went through really fast. Only extreme pain for a few seconds. My tubes were not blocked so this didn't solve our problems of conceiving, we ended up having to do IVF.

Hi girls, Well I have my HSG scheduled for this Friday 10/14/2011 at 9:20 am, so I am a little nervous but I do realize that this is for the greater good and that I need answers if I ever want to get my BFP. DH, has a second SA the same day of my HSG.

I had my FSH blood work this last friday and I have a vaginal ultrasound this wednesday on 10/12 in the morning. So the good news is that October should give me answers and hopefully if DH's SA results have high enough numbers than the next step will be IUI hopefully soon. So wish me luck.

Any of you girls that just recently had their HSG's care to share how their experience was??

I had mine done last month - it was uncomfortable but it took longer to get undressed & dressed again than it did to do the procedure!! DH came in with me & held my hand. It was as delightful as it always is when a doctor has their head between your legs but it really wasn't too bad. All was clear for me & we're still waiting for DH's SA to come back but AF started today so it didn't work it's BFP magic. Hope it goes ok for you x
