I just got a cart full of reasonably-good-for-me foods tonight. I start the suffering tomorrow. I'm a picky eater, and there's no point in pretending I won't struggle.

I'm not trying to be the healthiest person on the planet... Not even in the top million! But, I'd like to "do better" than I have been... which isn't hard! LOL

Also, hubby wants good salmon recipes. Anyone?

I started the healthier eating plan 5 months ago along with going to the gym at least twice a week. I have incorporated alot of leafy salads into my diet-spinach, raddichio and also tons of legumes like lentils, chick peas and black eyed peas. I was never much a meat eater but ive started eating lean meats like ostrich and rabbit.
Although being greek i always ate tons of fish, ive stopped since im now always thiking of the mercury!!!:(
Meg, my fave salmon receipe is a pasta dish with vodka and brik..mmmmm!!

mmmm salmon, my favorite!
i often buy a piece that has skin on one side.
i only season with pepper and salt (but not much as it doesn't need it really) or fish herbs,
bake on the side with no skin just enough it gets a little hard (butter needs to be very hot for this),
then turn it around and let it get ready on the skin side...don't cook too long or it'll get too dry and it's not nom anymore

is very good with tomatoes, cut up in dices and baked or just warmed up in the microwave (again, some seasoning).

my mom makes it often with tomatoes, onion and leek, all in one pan, veeery yummy too,
but i haven't yet mastered the art of making that too. if my fish is ready my leek isn't,
and if my leek would be ready my fish would be overcooked...
if you want to make this, i suggest taking the fish out of the pan for a while, prepare the
veggies in the same pan,
then add the fish again the last few minutes

oooh or in the oven, you put the piece of salmon on tin foil, add some seasoning,
some fresh herbs, a slice of lemon.
wrap it up and put it in a preheated oven (this also works on the barbeque),
we call it a "pappilot", in case you want to google

dammit, i'm craving salmon now!!! :p

i must admit, most of the above (except the thing in tin foil)... i do use alot of butter,
soy butter, don't know if that is really better, just a habit from when my lactose intolerance was very badly!

hmm salmon... i'd serve it with french fries - excuse... BELGIAN fries XD
but that's not very diet.... i think a cold potato salad is nice too...esp if you serve with tomatoes.
i suppose you could use light mayo or just no mayo...is a bit dry then, but that's a matter of getting used to,
my mom never put mayo on cold potatoes, but i always do

I'm trying to eat better without much sucess so far, so today i've had a mango, apple and banana smoothie for breakfast, lunch...i'm not sure what to have yet, all i seem to want is chocoltae lol.

If you want some nice Salmon receipes Megg and TB check out Tulip's Bonfire Babies thread in PAL - Hannah posted some there yesterday! xxx

Well, i bought myself a WiiFit on Friday, enjoying it so far, even if my abs hate me!

Trying to cut down on the crap i seem to have been eating since losing Charlie. So far so good. My problem is i get bored so easily .. i find foods i like, eat them all the time, then lose interest!

I am really yearning for fishfingers right now :(

Wow! Lots of responses! Salmon recipes are for the OH. I don't like it much. There's a place here that makes a yummy bourbon glazed salmon... but that's because it ceases to taste like salmon anymore! LOL I'll pass those along though!

I've only been up about 45 mins, so not gotten a chance to screw up yet today! I haven't even had lunch yet! I'm going to try my best though! EEK!

Deb - I know the feeling of being bored and eating things because you can! :(

Oh dear just re-read your recipe post TB and you mentioned Belgian fries which are officially the nicest fries ever - smothered in mayo. Sorry, not very appropriate of me to say that on a healthy eating post - no, they're horrible, boiled potatoes much better !

xxx

hahahaha thanks

but yes, i agree... potatoes, mmmm much richer in flavour, omnomnomnom

 riiiight

Megg, if you are looking for good recipies, you should try looking on recipezaar.com. They always have good recipies.

I'll have to have a look! Those fries sound awesome! I'm way more inclined to eat Belgian Fries today than boiled anything! Trust me. Hard day. :(

I am have been gradually changing my eating habits which hasn't been very hard. We have been eating less and less red meat and more chicken and fish. As much lean stuff as possible.

I like cooking new things each day but keep a little left over for those days I can't be bothered. I like eggs for lunch and tuna as snacks. Lots of green things.

Breakfast is celebrated with things like granola (my favourite), oatmeal and sometimes a yummy treat that isn't so healthy like milo.

When shopping for food, I aim for foods that are nutrient rich and calorie poor. I seem to have a lot more energy and not as hungry. When I was eating crap food, I was always hungry and it made me think that no matter how much food, if it my body doesn't get the right kind of nutrients, it still wants more.

I really gotta lay off the milo (hot chocolate), though.

I'm failing... but I've had a hard 2 days. Hoping that I'll do better on better days!

I just eat alot of natural and organic, what a difference. Even the meats are so much better.

Well Meg knows my story because she stalks me!:haha: But for you other ladies I will give you a bit of info and a run down on the "PLAN"! After 4 mcs and being told that if heparin shots dont work with the next pregnancy that I should consider giving up, Ive decided thats its time to take some drastic life changing measures, if I get a baby it will be a bonus! Im going to strip my diet of everything that is packaged and processed, mostly consume fruits and vegies as close to their natural state as possible, small amounts of chicken and fish, nuts will be in, loads of lovley fresh fruits and vegie juice made by myself and no booze or caffiene etc! Ive also signed up for a consultation with a Natropath who specialises in "baby making" problems and has a great rep here and both overseas, you can check them out here https://www.sharkeyshealingcentre.com.au/index.php I have this nagging feeling once I really clean my act up I will find I won't have a mc problem anymore! Stay tuned!! Huggle buggles to you all!:hugs:

I track my eating on www.sparkpeople.com - I don't do it to count calories per se (I am not trying to lose weight), but to make sure I get a good ratio of protein, carbs, and fats. I also read a lot of the blogs which are inspiring and have recipes and ideas

as an aside - everyone seems to be online, I wish there was a live chat site for us! go to bed shaerichelle, its after midnight where you are!

Its after midnight where I am too! LOL

TB cause leeks are memebers of the onion family tyeh will take a little while to cook. i would suggest that you put the onions and leek to cook untill slightly translucent. then you can add the other ingrendients to cook and that should solve your problems

the term pappilot is freach meaning to cook in a paper pocket, idealy you chould line the foil with greaseproof paper to prevent sticking. a delishous way to cook though.

Now as for the mayo option i would suggest thinning the mayo slightly with a bit of lemon juice and water or white vinegar, if you add some fresh chopped dill tastes great.

Deb i have a wiii fit, i don't use it very often cause the kids wont leave me alone whenever i get it out and by the time they go to bed i cant be bothered anymore. As for the cravings have a few fishfingers but accompany then with a nice fresh green salad, try lettuce, red onion, tomato, mushrooms, red capcicum and if you like olives and a bit of fetta, toss in a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar and some torn basil leaves.

Oh dear just re-read your recipe post TB and you mentioned Belgian fries which are officially the nicest fries ever - smothered in mayo. Sorry, not very appropriate of me to say that on a healthy eating post - no, they're horrible, boiled potatoes much better !,

Ok an option for boiled potatoes.
i usually make the potatoes, then in a non stick fry pan lightly sprayed with oil fry up some bacon bits, i put this on top of the boiled spuds with a little bit of evaporated milk and a touch of sour cream and some frem sliced herb like dill and a touch of basil. toss all together and serve with a nice piece of grilled steak or chicken

Becareful reducing the amount of red meat you eat, you still need the iron so try adding more legumes like chick peas and lentils iand heaps of green leafy veggies in or take an iron supliment.. Also having a glass of fresh OJ with meals helps to absorb the iron in food

AFM my favorite salmon dish is steamed salmon with a bernaise sauce, lightly drizzled with sweet soy served with a nice sweet potato mash and stramed greens. although the bernaise is eggs, tarragon & vinegar reduction, and butter so its best not to have to much. DH does like it when i make the bernaise to often because of the fat content. ***salivating at the though of my fav. salmon dish***
