Heartburn or a sign of preeclampsia?

Since last Wednesday I've been getting this horrible, severe burning sensation in my esophagus at night. I assume it's just heartburn or indigestion, but it only occurs at night and it happens no matter what I've eaten. It feels like I have a little ball of fire sitting in my upper chest area!
I am going to ask my doctor about it of course, but could this be a sign of preeclampsia? I read that women get this burning sensation that's often mistaken for heartburn with preeclampsia, and my blood pressure was slightly higher at my last check up. It's usually in the low hundreds and the nurse read it as 122 on Monday, but my Dr either didn't notice or wasn't concerned, because he didn't mention it. Also I seem to be gaining 1-3 pounds a week, but I don't have any swelling, headaches or nausea.

What do you think?

Sounds like heartburn to me, only because I am the same. My sister had bad pre-eclampsia (very nearly lost her and my niece) so I am monitored closer than normal for it and like you, going a little weight every week etc but no body is particularly worried. Blood pressure can often be a little higher at appointments because of stress and worry, whether we realise we are stressed or worried or not. One high reading isn't enough to cause concern, only if it's continuously elevated will they worry. I'm not sure what the second figures were but I know my sisters started off in the low 100's, and it was only when she had a couple of readings in the high 100's that they began to worry and she was admitted to hospital with a reading of 222, when she was induced it was 254 and the EMCS was performed a couple of hours later with it nearly 300.

If you are really worried then re-visit your doctor and tell your concerns but it sounds like a normal part of pregnancy to me (of course I am no expert).

Best of luck.

Sounds like heartburn to me too, I've had it too every night since about 21 weeks. I'm getting though a bottle of gaviscon a week! ha ha!

I mentioned it to my midwife and she didn't seem concerned - my bp was slightly elavated at my last check but she put it down to the very hot day we were having as I was boiling in the waiting area.

Mention it at your next check but hopefully its just baby getting higher up and squashing your digestive system giving you lovely heartburn!

Sounds just like heartburn to me, seems to happen to us pregnant people no matter what we eat anyway. Of course if you're that worried, go see your midwife or a GP to reassure you.

Could be reflux! I wouldn't worry. Try drinking some milk when you get it. I get it all the time and milk always seems to help. If I'm right pre-eclampsia is really, really rare before the third trimester.

Sounds like heartburn to me. I had it with my son and I'm having it again now. I think maybe it's worse at night because I'm laying down. I got to one point in my pregnancy near to the end with my son where the heartburn was so bad, it almost made me sick! The joys of pregnancy! People kept telling me that it meant baby would be born with a full head of hair. No babies in either mine or my husband's family have been born with a full head of hair so I didn't think mine would be but what do you know, my son had lots of hair when he was born! x

I had servere pre eclampsia last pregnancy from 20 weeks and i never had that as a symptom, i do how ever suffer really bad heart burn now ask your midwife for ranitadene its amazing stuff, works instantly and lasts all day x

I am right there with you! I feel like I'm constantly breathing fire. I get it from drinking ice water even!

I get it from water too, litrally everything i feel your pain lol x

All I have to say is, this baby better come out with a head full of hair! Lol! :haha:

Ugh the heartburn is awful. I fight with it all the time, no matter what I do to avoid it. Just like some of you I get it from even WATER. I've tried avoiding eating or drinking close to bedtime and STILL the minute I lay down I get slammed with wicked heartburn. It seems unavoidable for some of us.

Hahhahaha I always believed that old wives tale...both my son and daughter came out bald as can be, and the heartburn was awful. I refuse to believe that anymore, I'm destined for bald babies.

Mine used to be only at night, but now I get it all times of the day :(

And I'm sure my baby love will be bald as can be too! LOL. All of the family babies are bald until they're like 2 lol.

I get it all times of day too, night time is the worst though. There have been many nights I literally urped up stomach acid in the middle of the night. Such a lovely experience!

My daughter ended up with a MULLET at age 2 LOL..I wanted desperately to have her have hair I could brush and braid and make beautiful...Her first hair cut was when she was 3, and the only reason I cut it is because I thought it would encourage it to grow. Haha. Now she has it and it's a nightmare. It's thick, curly, and she looks like a cave child even after I brush it twice a day. I sure got more than I bargained for :)

Well this is definitely a relief to wake up to! :) I had no idea heartburn was so common, I've never had it before pregnancy. Ugh!

I've only ever had heart burn in pregnancy and with my 1st 3 its only struck at night time, this time it can be any time of the day and depends what I eat, but with the others it made no difference.

Also there is apparently some truth to the old wives tale although it obviously isn't 100%. The same hormone that causes the relaxation that allows the acid to come back up is the hormone that cause fetal hair growth. All of mine have been born with full heads of hair. Also I think its the laying down that makes it so bad at night time. Mine would always wake me up.
