I have read that heating pads are a big no, but what if its on my upper back? I pulled a muscle just below my shoulder blade and its killing me...

If you place it on your upper back, on a medium to low setting, I don't see the harm in it at all. I would be careful to not let it make you overly warm, where it raises you body temp, however. I don't see the harm in 10-30 min. on your upper back. I sometimes slip mine in my pillow case, and lean my upper back on it, which does provide some relief.

I think on your upper back it should be fine. Like pp said, as long as it's on a low setting.

My midwife said it was fine to use a hot water bottle on my lower back and hips. Their concern is if your core body temp raises too high which is why you're advised against really hot baths and saunas. A hot water bottle or heat pad doesn't raise you're core temp just that isolated area.

My OB says heating pads are fine as long as they're not on the belly.
