help concerning welfare

Can someone please tell me what i can do if I want to apply for welfare. In my case i only know the dad's last name because he lied to me about his real name, he doesn't want to be involved in his son's life in any way..even with child support. Is welfare going to ask me about him and his information? what should I say, plus I don't want him knowing that I'm applying for welfare.
