Hello,

I went to the doctor today with Samuel as he has a cough after feeding. He has started to be very fussy during his feeds. If he stops to be winded he will burp than not take the bottle back. He arches his back and screams very high pitch if i try to put the teat in his mouth. The doctor says he has reflux but as he is ok in himself to just give him smaller more regular feeds. He did spit up during the examination which was over 2 hours after his last feed.
I'm not sure how more regular i can feed him, here is his feeding routine from yesterday. I let him tell me when he wants feeding

1am - 90ml
3:45am - 140ml
8:15am - 150ml
10:45am - 100ml
1:45pm - 150ml
5pm - 100ml
7:30pm - 100ml
10:30pm 130ml

I had him weighed today and he has only put 4oz on this week, last week he put 11oz and on average he will gain 7oz a week. Health visitor seemed to think this was due to his age and him being more interested in whats going on in the room rather than reflux. I went to a different Childrens' Centre than normal and wont be going back.

Is there anything you have done, other than Dr giving prescription, that has helped your little one?

I was planning on waiting till next weeks weigh in and seeing how his weight gain has been, if it's low again and Sam still looks in pain when feeding going back to doctors.

hiya my DD has reflux..... still

she went through this phase many many times, eventually i changed her bottle and she will feed more as she seems to like avent better than MAM. she was on gaviscon that helped, but caused conspitation which cause reflux never ended circle. She was then put on to lacutlose and in the end we are now on ranitidine.

i have noticed that if i give her colic calm (google it) before a feed she seems better, at the minute we are coming out the other side of a bad phase and i truly know how you feel.

you are doing a brilliant job, he is still putting on weight, you've asked for help, now push for it, if you are concerned start to cry infront of the dr etc..... it works wonders for getting answers

Make sure she sits up for at least 30 minutes post bottle (meaning - don't lay the LO on their back)

Make sure the diaper is loose around the waist and limit movement following the bottle.

Purchase formula with rice already added. This was done by my doctor and worked wonders for my LO, who was 9 weeks at the time.

All my babies had GERD. We were told by the baby dr rice cereal. And for the stopping to burp. I'd let the baby eat as much as he wants first. Then try burping him. My LO's did that, the3n I started doing that. For us it resulted in more satisfactory feedings.

Just to add, rice cereal is NOT recommended to be added to bottles in the UK (it poses a chocking risk), Gaviscon would be prescribed first in terms of meds (it's a thickener for formula which is designed for this purpose).

When my LO first had reflux I found this website invaluable for tips such as propping up mattresses, rubbing not patting to wind etc:

dom has reflux too, i also let him take as much as he wants then give him a very thorough rub on the back to bring up wind, it helps if you do it over the shoulder

Propping the mattress underneath helps, so its at a slight angle

as AP said loosen the nappy and dont put things on like tight jeans, it irritates them more

the gaviscon has really helped dom, he still fusses but no more screaming and refusing feeds at least, if the formula is too thick get some variflow teats  and sitting them up helps, but that can also be hard,if you lean them a little too far forward they will bring up some milk straight away lol! (found that the hard way on OH's jeans)

oh! also avoid tummy time up to an hour after a feed if hes a real sensitive one, dom gets cranky if i attempt it so i have to wait a fair while. Ive found trying to get plenty of water down him has helped too, although this is one mega fight. If he does get constipated on the gaviscon, which dom did majorly :( add a teensie bit of sugar to the water, my doctor recommended this and it did loosen him up. Just dont do it all the time, and i was told 1/4 teaspoon to every 4oz of cooled boiled water

Hope he feels well soon hun, i also made a post on this a few wks back:

HTH's and get well soon samuel! :hugs:

I found that when my LO was having a reflux hissy fit whilst feeding that she settled and took her milk if I swaddled her... I know people have thoughts about fully swaddling but when you have a very fretful refluxy baby who wont' feed barely ever it has worked wonders for us.. I totally agree with the other comments about wind, and patting, propping up the mattress etc, have all helped :)

Hi. We have a reflux support thread in baby club if you want to ask in there for more advice...
