HELP! my cat wants to sleep in the bassinet!

Our cat loves carrier bags and loves that crunchin sound so I think he'd probably like tin foil too! Im not too worried, slong as he doesn't try to smother Jacob it'll be fine, probably end up just shutting him out of the room when babie's sleeping.

Wow, I'm shocked that anyone would get rid of a pet because they were pregnant. I'm sure baby will be getting into lots of things he shouldn't,I certainly don't expect I'll be able to keep him in a sterile environment forever-and I wouldn't want to. Cat hair isn't the worst thing in the world. Sorry if I seem judgemental, I really don't mean to be, we're obviously just coming at this from totally different angles.

I cant even bother battling with my 2 rascals I just keep the door closed. The main 2 reasons are I have washed a lot of the stuff and my little boy kitty cuddles anything soft, he loves laying on laundry, clean or dirty, he loves any pile of blankets or anything so I am positive he will sleep in the bassinett. I dont want to battle all the cat hair. If he never learns that he can before bubs is here, he probably wont when bubs is here. I do have a cat net for the bassinett though.
The other thing is he is a little shit and thinks my walls are scratching posts and refuses to use the scratching post and we have the nursery all new and decorated and i would scream the house down if he ruined the walls!!!
I dont worry about smothering the baby because that is mostly a myth started by people who hate cats. What they do is they snuggle up next to baby for warmth, the same as they do with adults and people have thought the cats were smothering. I certainly wouldnt want them snuggling at night though because even toys in their beds arent allowed let alone a kitty. lol

Thanks everyone.
I've opened the door to the nursery to let her poke around in there to get used to it...
Hopefully that'll work but I'm willing to try the foil trick for sure!

I don't think it's bad that someone got rid of their cat when they got pregnant. Apart form the hair and the fact that they just love to sleep in all the babies things, they go in their tray, shit, piss, kick it over and then jump on the same work tops you are gonna make your babies bottles on. Nice.

Yes they do, but do you not clean your work tops??!! for Gods sake ! lol
You can't wrap kids up in cotton wall all their lifes, they're always going to end up touching SOMETHING which has SOMEKIND of bug on it. I think it's terrible if you have to get rid of cats because you're having a baby, can't love them that much in the first place IMO, our cats part of our family wouldn't dream of it...!

lol, did i offend someone cos i got rid of my cats?? i didnt just abandon them by the way, i gave them to a lovely friend who owns a farm, who has time and space for them, i still go c them!! xx

That's funny because my two LIKE bags, so I have to keep them put away otherwise they chew and nibble on them.

One of my cats is exactly same. soon as she hears a carrie bag being screwed up or a foil sweet wrapper shes there sat waiting for you to let her have it to play with :/

I let the kitty sniff the new things while supervised and now I keep the door to the nursery and our bedroom shut for the last 6 weeks or so in preparation of the baby coming (so she hopefully won't make a direct association between the baby and being 'locked out' of certain rooms thereby heightening jealousy). My kitty isn't very happy with not being allowed in, but she is getting used to it...s.l.o.w.l.y...and i just give her a bit more attention/petting and love to try and make up for the 'off limit' rooms in the house. :)

Have you bought a cat net? These are especially for keeping cats from sleeping on babies' faces. Just keep the net on it now and perhaps consider providing the cat with a temptingly cosy alternative bed. Cats love cardboard boxes and baskets, put an old wool jumper in the bottom and they won't be able to resist.

Of course I clean my work tops but do you watch your cats 24/7? Do you know the last time they took a shit then decided to get up on the side and sit there preening themselves? Yuk...I know that kids come into contact with all sorts of nasties but I wouldn't want cat shit being one of them.

Oh, and no matter how much I loved a pet I would always put my kids first.

Well if i'm honest if I was preppin something for the baby i'd always do it on a clean work surface, so this whole debate is pretty pointless if i'm honest. There's no need to get rid of cats just cause they happen to shit in a cat tray! That's all i'm saying!

I suppose it depends how you live, I know people who think their cat's shit don't stink lol I think most people would clean a surface they were using to prepare the baby's feeds but you would be surprised at the amount of people who don't.

I don't think there is any need to get rid of a cat because it shits in a tray, I just think it's one of a long list of things that would put me off having one around a baby personally. And I also just said I don't think it's wrong that a previous poster rehomed her cat when she fell pregnant.

I agree, I don't think I'd be able to get rid of my cats, we rescued them and had to hand feed them. Of course kids always come first, but the cats are like my little babys too.
I got my cats to keep them, not to get rid as soon as a baby came along, it's not hard to close a couple of doors and wipe side's down.

Everyone has a different opinion on things tho.

Its alright, we did aswell we had a young kitten but he was terrible for not using the litter tray, plus was incredably irratating bless him! He needed so much attention, but we both worked so much he wasnt getting it! We gave him to some good friends of our who absolutley adore him and she is a SAHM so he gets all the attention he wants with her.

Im really glad we rehomed him and i know it was the 100% right decision for him and for us!

yes i love animals and love my cats, i cried my heart out when i gave them up, just for me and my partner who both work and already have a 4 year old we thought with a new baby we just wouldnt have time, that with the extra cleaning etc,and at the time cleaning out litter tray whilst pregnant etc, just a personal choice, we had them from kittens and theyre beautiful cats, but the lady who has them now has time, space and money for them. please dont think im a bad person :( i didnt mean to cause a arguement just for us this is what we did! x

bexie- I don't think you're a bad person. you did what you had to and at least they're at a good home :hugs:
I appreciate everyone's help and advice on this! So far, it looks like I may have to put the foil down on the bassinet...

I would never get rid of my cat! i'm not one of those people that thinks their cat's "shit don't stink" but I am one of those to be very lucky to have a very well behaved lovely cat. She likes affection and pats but she will never come and sleep on you or get in your face which i think is also a good thing with having a baby around. Her only irritating trait is waking me up at 4am every morning to go outside to do her business. which i have no problem with- I used to have a tray inside- she refused to use it she wouldn't go inside at all she HAS to go outside, lol, strange girl. If I had a cat like my friends cat then yes i would give her up. She sprays inside, she sprays on the sides of drawers, over the carpet etc, and yep she is fixed too! But she has never been looked after like a "pet" they just feed her and leave her outside when they arent home, she has never had that human affection given to her, so that's probably part of why she does these things.
x

I had this problem when we first set the cot up, puss was always sleeping in it. We kinda left her to it (the plastic bag is still on the matress)& now the novelty for her has worn off, she doesn't bother with any of babies things cos they're not new to her.

Some people don't realize that giving them to a new baby free home is sometimes the most unselfish thing to do for them because I honestly can't imagine that any cat would want a toddler pulling their hair and tail and annoying them like most kids are going to do eventually! (unless you have hawk eyes and super human reflexes to stop them) lol It's kind of unfair to force it on them if there are better options. I bet your cats are super happy living on a farm!

When my oldest was born my youngest cat flat out hated him and was miserable with him living in the same house as her. I think the crying upset her the most but she really just didn't want him in the same room with her ever. Best thing I ever did for her was find her a kid free home. It just wasn't her thing and it wasn't fair for me to force it on her.
