Running from the thread by Janet(xprincessx), what are the chances of me changing Joshua's surname to mine?

Short back story - J's dad has been very hit and miss with visits and he is on his last chance (already mentioned this in court), which means if he misses just one more contact, he won't be seeing Joshua again. If this happens, I would really like to be able to change Josh's surname to my own.

Has anyone had any experience of this who can help me please?

I don't know if it's the same over there, but my mother changed my sister's last name to our step-father's because her biological father wasn't involved in her life. She just had to petition the court for the name change and pay a fee. They went to court on their appointed date and explained to the court official assigned to their case why they were requesting the name change. The court agreed with the reason and granted the request. (Mom had full custody of sister at that point too)
