Just wondering how long you had to be ttc in the uk before you are referred to a specialist, seen 2 different docs now and they both said something different!

Also, I am having some investigations done on my ovaries at the mo as I am in a lot of pain, if the hospital find something, does anyone know if i will get referred straight away??

i work at a hospital and the times under government guidelines is 18 weeks, which means you must have the initial appointment and start treatment (if nessessary) within 16 weeks from when the hospital recieved the referral

xxxxx

not sure if hospitals vary on that.

if you are under 35, you need to be actively trying for 12 months before you can get a referral to gynaecology/fertility services.
over 35, 6 months

If you are found to have a problem eg polycycstic ovaries, you should be referred straight away

As the girls said... normally 12 months of ttc - i think it's something like 80% of people trying fall within 12 months. However, my GP did say that the guidelines are different if you have known fertility issues i.e. Endo or PCOS - they would then do a referral within 6 months.

We saw the GP after a year and now 18 months later we are due to start our first IVF cycle.

Good luck! :dust:

It depends on your age. If you've been trying to conceive for about 6 months and you're over 35 or if you've been trying for longer and under 35. At least this is what I've heard. I started going to a fertility expert after 1 year, and it's the gynecologist who usually tells you when your case is out of his control.

In the UK it's a bit different - 12 months regardless of age and IVF on the NHS isnt free if you are over the age of 38 by most PCTs.

Also it's the GP that does the basic tests and refers you - not a gyne - they run the basics and then refer you to the local NHS fertility specialist to your area who conduct more tests and eventually treat you after about 12-18 months - in some cases 2 years. Nothing moves quickly here!!

Nope I have been diagnosed with PCOS by TWO doctors and I have still been told I have to wait until I have been trying a year. I think its because it is still possible with PCOS to get pregnant naturally. I have been TTC since June and because nothing has happened I went to my GP and pretty much begged to be refered but he wouldnt! He said all he can do is 21 day bloods to see if im even ovulating by myself...if I'm not I will still have to wait until June 2010 for any treatment etc.

I'm only 19 so maybe Ive just had 2 crap doctors haha! I get my blood test results back today to see if I'm ovulating on my own....I hope I am atleast that way i will know there is a slight possibility I could get pregnant before treatment is needed...if I'm not ovulating on my own expect me to come on later and moan hahaha ! xx

if you have PCOS and are found to not be ovulating with 2 or more day 21 blood tests, you can be referred earlier than 12 months.

Also if you are over 35 you don't have to wait 12 months due to IVF age limits and less chance of success the greater your age.

Yeah I do have PCOS but as I said previously I have been told by two doctors I still have to wait a year?! The first doctor said I had to wait a year....I wasn't happy with that so I changed doctors....then my new doctor also said I had to wait a year
