since aiden was born, i've had NO pain whatsoever with bfing. but today, my right boob is REALLY sore. feels like it's bruised. could this be a blocked duct? i've let him feed off it, but it is SO sore. and tried expressing, but that just hurt more.

any ideas? thanks ladies xx

sounds like a blocked duct hun you have to get through the pain and empty the breast as much as possible take some paracetamol and feed that side till its empty and there are no lumps, a hot bath or running a shower on it might help

I had this when Imogen was about 3 weeks, I just kept feeding her off that side and was re leaved when it was emptied, took about 2 days and then it was fine again

if your breast is red where it is sore, or the pain goes down your arm, if there is a solid area on your breast where it is sore and you have a temp - it sounds like mastitus . I got it the first time when my little one was about 3 weeks old too!

I should know - I've got recurring mastitus and am collecting my 4th round of antibiotics today (my son is 11 weeks old!)

Don't leave it - get your GP to prescrbe flucloxacillin - if he prescribes augmentin or co-amoxiclav they dont work!!

Do what the other ladies said - feed and express from that side, pain relief - you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together (provided you aren't allergic to them!) and always take ibuprofen with food!

warm bath or shower and massage the sore area as much as you can it will help to break down any milk in blocked ducts so it is easier to express.

I would also suggest getting in touch with a lactation consultant (a bf expert) who can watch you feed your baby and try and address the reason why you got mastitus - my little man has a tight frenulum which makes it harder for him to latch on to my left side - but I wouldn't have known this were it not for Jo (my lactation consultant) watching me feed! (I'm a midwife too - so I would have thought I could tell if he wasn't going on right! Obviously not!)

Good luck honey - hope you come through this quickly!

ouch, sounds like a blocked duct, I get this and it feels like a bruise really deep in the breast. I get in the bath and relax, then massage the breast with my fist clenched (sounds wierd but works), if milk leaks out then let it, if not it doesnt mean it isnt working, just keep trying. Feed from that side as often as possible even if it hurts and iof the pain doesnt subside or it becomes red, hot or you feel flu-ish then iot could be mastitis. Try to get rid of the blockage as it can lead to mastitis. All the best, and trust me, once you get the hang of getting rid of the odd blockeed duct it is much easier x
