Help self employed people!

Help please

I'm not self employed & never realised I ever was. I recently was notified by the tax office that I am owed a ta x rebate of at least £800.
They asked me for my missing information which I told them (I worked 2 jobs which for some reason they had no record of. I was told to contact both employers & get either P45s or a letterhead with the info needed on it.

The one employer has got back to me & explained I wasn't on the books & was responsible for paying my own tax and NI. :O
major shock for me as I recieved cheques and thought everything had been taken off :,(

I only worked there approx 10 weeks , earnt between 60-140 a week. So not enough to be taxed anyway , so what do I do ?
I can contact my bank & see if they can find the cheque records but this was 2+ years ago.

The other employer is sorting me a letterhead as I have already been sent P45 but lost it:/

So any advice I really need this money.

bh i dont understand why they would contact you about a job you did that they knew nothing about

you were not self employed (even if the 2nd job thought you were) you have to register as self employed

how can you be owed tax if you didnt pay it though?

I think you should go to citizens advice. As an employer I have been told we have to prove self employment or we are liable for the tax. I don't think the employer can tell you afterwards that you should pay the tax - sounds dodgy if you ask me!

Ahh sorry I didn't explain well. They contacted me regarding what I am owed for the last tax year, they had gaps in the information from the previous tax years , 2008/2009/some of 2010 . I am owed around £800 from 2010s tax year, but to process they needed info from the 2 missing jobs from 08-09. Then they are going to process for all 3 tax years.

Right so I'm going to ring hm revenue Monday and see what they say.
