Hello all

Well I'll try to make this as quick as possible.

So I used to be a chef but I stepped out of the trade because of the ridiculous 15 hour shifts, low pay, physical work and above all the smells making me so sick when I was having terrible MS!

So I was out of work for about a month until I felt better and then I found a job in a bookshop and had my interview and I didn't mention the fact I was 9+something pregnant because honestly I'd gone a month with no earnings and my focus was entirely on getting the job... Didn't think they'd give me it if I told them :/

Thing is I did get the job and now they're being really good to me, and I didn't think this through, I'm so stupid!

I'll be 11 weeks tomorrow, I'm starting to show, I mean I've not got a bump as such yet but I used to be really tiny like a size 6-8 uk so my waist is very thick now and I'm already in maternity work trousers.

It wouldn't be so much of a problem if I could stay til 8 months or whatever but thing is my lease on my flat runs out in December and then I wanna move back to my hometown with my fiance... I don't wanna leave them in the lurch at Christmas.

I had this ridiculous plan of telling them after my scan at 13+1 but I don't think "I've just found out I'm pregnant!...Yeah, 13 weeks?" is gonna go down very well.

Any advice on how and when to tell them?? I'm so superstitious as well, I feel like if I tell them before the scan there'll be something wrong with the baby :/

Sorry for the life story

Any help greatly appreciated

xx

i would wait until after the scan, legally they can not fire you for being pregnant and they cant be bias and not give you a job if your pregnant although people do that..

i would not worry you could just tell a wee white lie and say you just found out you had no idea as you are on depo so you didnt know or something

xx

You're not legally obliged to tell your employer you're pregnant until you are 25 weeks, but I think by then they'll have guessed.
I dont know what to suggest, do you have a contract or are you on a trial or probationary period at all?

As above you can't be sacked or anything for being pregnant. I would tell them when you're ready, after the scan. You're not entitled to smp through them, if it's a permanent post I'm not sure on right about leave... But if you're planning on moving away anyway then that won't matter.

as above hon ^ your not obliged to tell your employer until you are 25wks anyway and the only way it will effect you is maternity benefits but if you are moving then that wont matter so much anyway....tell them when you are good and ready!

As most have said, you're not obligated to tell anyone for a while. Also, as much as you may enjoy the people with whom you work, you have to remember that work is work and your family is your family. Don't let emotions interfere with making the best decision for you.

Thanks guys... Yeah I know my rights but does it apply on a new job? Yeah I'm on a 3 month probationary which means the day my lease is up IS my last day of my 3 month probation :s and I was thinking of saying something like I had no idea at all... I'v already kissed my SMP goodbye haha xx

Discrimination against pregnant women ALWAYS applies!

my old job we had a lady start then announce a few weeks later she was pregnant no one thought it was bad or anything :) i am sure you will be fine! :) the ladies here are right they cant sack you or anything just cos your pregnant.

tell then when you feel its right. all will work out! :)

I got a new job then found out i was pregnant, i phoned them to tell them before i started but i was already employed so they had to see it through!
I didn't qualify for smp but maternity allowance isn't alot less tbh, google it i think you have to have been working for so many weeks out of the last year or something so your previous job will count?
If i was you i'd tell them now & make out you've just found out!
I'm thinking IF there was something wrong with the baby you would need their support anyway & obviously time off x

It's is a shame about the SMP, your old employer would have been obliged to find you suitable work that you were able to do if you didn't feel able to continue with your normal duties, which in your case I suspect would have been suspended with pay as there's not much other work you do as a chef. I agree with the other ladies, tell a white lie and say you just found out (if they work in a bookshop they must have seen the books about women who had no idea they are pregnant til they give birth lol) but don't worry about leaving your new employer in the lurch over Christmas - it's part time heaven for those looking for a bit of extra cash!! There will be loads of people looking for a christmas job to fill your place :)
