2 hour fasting today for GD. Results are back in. GD again this pregnancy. So bummed out. I went in feeling pretty good about things. Now I'm not. Means blood sugar levels before and after every meal as well as Insulin 5 times a day. My fingers were so sore and my belly was covered in bruises by the time I delivered DS3 and now I have to go though it again?! And I'm being treated from 19 week until birth unlike last time where it was 6 weeks treatment. Really feel like I have drawn the short straw this time around.

I had a specialist appointment yesterday and they said the fact that it's been caught early is a good thing and I may not need Insulin until much later anyhow. So far I've been eating a lot of fruit, veg and whole/dark grains which is what they want. I only eat them because I enjoy them so that makes that part easier for me. :) I have another appointment next week so they will keep an eye on growth and talk me back though what needs to happen this time. I was told that as long as my sugar levels are around 5.0 I SHOULDN'T need insulin but I'm getting between 5.5-6 so we will see. But no spikes over 7.7 2 hours after eating so I'm still remaining positive.

I made sure I told them that I will NOT be consenting to a medical induction or a section especially as all my babies have been almost 9lb and DS3 was my diabetic baby. DS1 was my heaviest at 8lb 15oz at 40 weeks, his younger brother 8lb 10oz at 38 so I'm not worried and have accepted I will never have my 6.5lb baby. I was just under 9lb at birth as was hubby so it won't be happening. I will agree to a sweep and that's it so they have made a note on my files of that. But my midwife won't let me be induced or have a section unless she's worried - which she wasn't last time. Came out yesterday feeling a lot more positive that I did when I went in. :)

I totally understand your frustration. I had insulin resistance before I got pregnant and was diagnosed with GD at around 8 weeks (I'm now 19w), and have been on insulin since then. It sucks, especially since with my first baby I was able to manage with diet and metformin, but in the end I can handle it for my baby's sake. Thankfully needles don't bother me.

I hope everything goes well for you!

I've just been diagnosis with gd too. 4th pregnancy, first time with gd. I'm only 11 weeks, so i have a long haul of annoying to go... But I guess positive news I probably will come out of this pregnancy with less weight than when I started with eating gd diet... any tips or advice? I'll be going to diabetes center next week for all the stuff.

I understand how you are feeling - except this is my second pregnancy with GD.

In regards to eating. Avoid white wheat products where you can these tend to have a LOT of carbs and sugars and replace them with dark rye, pumpernickle, seeds, brans, nuts, grains etc. You will still need to monitor what you eat but what's great about these is that they are low GI and keep you feeling a lot fuller than you would normally. And they taste amazing! Avoid sweet foods and again, go for nuts, fruits, legumes, pulses and foods high in protein - eggs and beans on toast are a fantastic cheap, low GI meal and is incredibly filling too. If you do have a sweet tooth like I do, dark chocolate is a good option. Fruits you need to be careful of especially banana and kiwifruit as they are high in natural sugars but play around with these things and keep notes of what puts your levels though the roof. You can probably counteract some of those sugars by adding them to soy shakes or having it with cereal and yoghurt. And proteins are important too! Drinking plenty of water though out the day will help with diluting those sugars in your foods and helping to maintain what is hopefully good sugar levels through the remainder of your pregnancy.

Sorry to hear.

I was diagnosed with GD at 12 weeks this time - they tested me early since I had GD last time. Last pregnancy I managed with diet control, but I need insulin this time. I was like you, 5.6-6 in the morning and they said absolutely need insulin if fasting glucose won't get to under 5.3 because you can't do anything to control the overnight insulin. Oh well. I also take Fragmin shots so I'm running out of room to inject.

I have already consented to my c-section being between 37-38 weeks. I've had too many losses and I don't want to risk a degrading placenta at the end. Last time I went at 38+6 but I didn't need insulin.

Is your belly covered in bruises yet? That's the part I'm dreading. By the time I went into labour with DS3 last time I looked like I'd taken several heavy hits to the belly. It was black and yellow! I'm hoping that I can avoid induction or a section again this time. I managed last time even though I delivered an almost 9lb son after 12 hours of un-medicated labour. I had gas in the last 10 minutes but that's only because I was trying to push with a slight cervical lip. So far, midwife is happy with the growth of baby so there is no reason to expect this delivery will be any different.

I saw the Specialist the other day and he said although my levels are okay for this point in my pregnancy, he really wants to get things under control before I get to the last trimester so I'm on Insulin after breakfast and dinner. Can't remember what it's called but it's the slow acting so not Novarapid. My levels are looking pretty stable at the moment too - below 5.5 most mornings before I eat. And I am more aware of what I can get away with and what I can't. I made the mistake of having a bowl of wedges with sour cream, cheese, bacon and sweet chilli sauce while at work today because A: the Insulin keeps things in check and B: he wants me to eat regular meals anyhow. But I had to leave early because the starch just made me really heavy and uncomfortable to work. So I've told the chef, if it's not an omelette, don't make me a staff meal anymore. :haha: That was at 12pm today. It's 9pm now and I'm still not hungry but will eat soon anyhow just for records.
