i was diagnosed with a hernia about 6 months ago and i have chest pain with it alot.i was wondering if anyone else had a hiatal hernia and delivered natural with it.i hope i dont have to have a C section

i dont have one but ohs mum does she gets awful pain and has had two ops on it!

hope you get the delivery you want xx

I had one of those and had the operation four years ago. I got heartburn in the morning after cereal. I have five key holes to remind me but did get 6 weeks off work. Try to avoid foods that bring it on worse, mine was anything with tomato's, fizzy drinks, chocolate, and greasy foods. They do suggest having peppermint tea but the smell for me was horrible, the tablets are better. When you sleep use 2/3 pillows which avoids the acid coming back up. Hope this helps.

I'm glad I found this thread as I think this is what I may have, I have been suffering for what feels like a lifetime but has been the past 6 weeks with indigestion, bloating and a tightness feeling around my stomach, I can only eat very small amounts but even then I feel so much worse afterwards.

Just wondering how others with this coped during pregnancy, as I say I am yet to have it confirmed but if it is what I have then I'm worried about how my growing baby will affect it.

Hi ladies, I hope i can help you all in 2 ways here. I myself have a Hiatus Hernia AND i'm a gastric nurse (currently working in Endoscopy). I leave myself at your disposal .
Firstly are you undr anyone at your local hospital? H.H's are extremely common & can be treated with medication if they are not too severe. They can also grow & shrink, basically the more you vomit & produce excess stomach acid the more they grow & vice versa.
Medication (i.e a PPI proton pump inhibiter) stops you making excess stomach acid which is what causes the awful chest pains (i was in hospital for 103 days over a year before i got diagnosed and onto correct medication), it is not known to be harmful in pregnancy (i am taking a high dose now) and it can make the world of difference.
There is no reason why you shouldn't have a normal delivery, i know i plan to.
Surgery is usually avoided these days now we know we can control it on safe medication unless it is causing sever problems & the patient is drastically loosing weight and becoming malnourished because of it.
Have i missed anything out?
Stress plays a major contributing factor so try to chill (not easy especially right now) and foods are an issue, try to avoid spice, grease and going hungry for too long.
Feel free to post here (i'll subscribe tot he thread) or PM me if you'd like more info or if i can be of any help.
Good luck to you all ladies xxx

Just joining this conversation. I know it's old, but this is a current issue for me. I have been suffering from acid reflux and a hiatal hernia for about 6 months. I am newly pregnant and it is worse than ever. I am taking Prilosec-40mg which helps but I still have some discomfort. Anyone else taking a PPI while pregnant, and if so, what dosage?
I've tried Zantac, Pepsid, other lesser strength options, but they just don't cut it. I want to feel comfortable, but don't want to take any risks for the baby. When all this is said and done, I think I will request the TIF surgery to fix this hernia once and for all. I hate being on meds, though I'm very thankful for them in the meantime.

limpetsmum: Don't know if you still check this post, but you seem to have alot of experience with this issue. Any light you can shed would be appreciated.

Hi everyone. I just found out that I am pregnant recently and have been having a heck of a time with acid reflux, indigestion, and bloating. I feel horrible :( I have a hiatal hernia and I am wondering if that is a big part of the problem. I'm scared that I am only 8 weeks along because I have heard that acid reflux gets really bad in the 3rd trimester but I can hardly function right now. I'm very thankful for your remedies and sharing anything that has worked for you.

So far, the things that have had a slight success rate on me are:
-Camomile Tea
-Apple Cider Vinegar
-Exercise
