Hi everyone,
I was trying to find out if i was accruing ni credit because of claiming cb, so i was cruising round the government website when i came across this:
https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefitcharge/index.htm
Am i a complete muppet whose missed something important regarding child benefit here?
My oh makes just over 50k so we were expecting to lose, then have cb reduced, at somepoint next year...now a charge instead? Is this because sahm's were going to stop accruing ni credits if they lost cb so they're going about it differently?
Sorry if i'm making no sense i've just lost track of all the proposed changes to child benefit recently. If anyone can figure out what the buggers i'm talking about, some help would be most appreciated!

Okay so it's not a charge per se but it will be taxed. Your oh will have to start doing a self assessment each year.

So presumably it will be taxed at 40%?
I'm just baffled because when they were going to scrap it for high income families it was big news but this I haven't heard anything about.
Also my OH already does a self assessment as part of his work is freelance - will he put it on there or is it different? I just think it's naff because it's my income not his!!! It's all I get right now and I can't believe it if they're going to tax it at 40...

Absolutely taxed at 40%. We actually loose it totally as oh is earning over 60k. The joke of the whole thing is a couple earning 49k each will still get full benefit, ( household total of 98k), yet one sahm and a partner who earns over 60k get naff all.

Ps at least your oh already does a sa, imagine those families who are on paye and suddenly have to sa, just to claim a measly amount. Oh also I think the amount is sliding, so if oh earns 55k say its less than 50k earner but more than a 59k earner, if you get what I mean?

This is all effective as of 7th January.

Thanks for your help. I do agree it is a joke - I wouldn't mind if it was assessed by whole household income but this is just stupid.

7 Jan is a weird time to start this. I will have earned over 60k this year but I have just finished at work and will not earn anything next year (OH gets 35k), will I stop getting CB from now until April, and then start again?

I havent had any correspondance as I actually have to date only earned £22k, the remainder of the 60k is paid in January.

I would assume you would need to do a tax return for this year ( next tax year) and you won't get it that year, but will the following, if you know what I mean? Speak to hmrc I'm no expert.

Thanks, you sound like an expert! Why dont they just wait until 5 April?
