Hi,

I have already had two scans so am happy that everything is OK, but I forgot to ask about highlights. I have terrible roots and really do to sort them out, do you think it's ok to highlight?

I have read lots of differing things, and the oppinion seems to be that as they don't touch the scalp it really is ok.

Any hairdressers that can advise or anyone who has asked their midwife?

My hairdresser told me she wouldnt do it till 16 weeks but thats just one hairdresser, just ask at the salon.

I found going back dark was much easier!!:haha:

I asked my midwife about this yesterday and she said there's no link with hair dying and problems with the baby. She did say however that the scalp changes in pregnancy so you have to have a patch test even if you've had one before

I have never even thought it was a risk - always had my hair dyed through pregnancy??

Oops, just got my hair done yesterday. Hope all is okay!!

I was unsure on this but there didn't seem to be much evidence around that modern day colours would cause any harm, just that your colour may turn out a little differently. I had mine coloured from brown to red on Wed and its the colour it should be. lol x

I am wondering the same thing. And my roots are coming in full force now lol. I hate how it looks. But Im too nervous to do anything about it. And my dyed hair color is bleach blonde, so very intense dying...But i guess better to be safe than sorry. Guess i will look like a clown for the next 8months :haha:

I agree with this. From my understanding, companies will always say 'it's better to be safe than sorry' even when there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. There is some really helpful information on Here and it does suggest that hair dye is fine, but you may find that your pregnancy has changed how you may react - so do a skin test.
It does frustrate me that so much of the 'do's and don'ts' plays on our fears, and whilst logically we may know this, it's still impossible not to worry! :dohh:

My doctor said it's completely safe to dye my hair during pregnancy ... and that's a full dye - highlights are even less contact. You should be fine!

This is exactly what my midwife told me the other day after I was worried that I had completely bleached my roots with strong peroxide! Apparently its just hear'say there's no actually evidence! I'd never heard of not being able to be bnb :) and plus ur only highlighting, the bleach doesn't touch the scalp xXxx

I'd skip it to be safe, definitely. Hair dyes have nasty chemicals in them that are NOT safe for a baby, and some things do cross the placenta. I wouldn't dye my hair at all while pregnant - it's not worth the risk at all.

Thanks for all the answers and it's as I thought so will go ahead and sort out my dreadful roots tomorrow!

Let's just hope that the smell of the chemicals doesn't set the morning sickness off!!

I went to salon for touch up highlights when I was 8 weeks. It is actually safer than all over color, because the highlights do not touch your skin. Also the odor is much lower than regular color. The only problem is that because of your hormones you can have brassy tint in your highlights. My stylist had to use two different toners! Other than that I am 12 weeks now and baby is OK. Highlights are safer than painting your nails in my opinion. I can't paint my nails because the odor is too strong for me and makes me sick.

i had mine done at 4 weeks and my hairdresser is 1 of my best friends and she said its ok to have highlights :)

I've always continued dying my hair during pregnancy. I even had my doc. comment on my different hair color at an appt. and never once did he say anything about it being unsafe...who really knows.
