Hi ladies me and my DS has just come home from hospital but I'm already confused about night feeds. We don't mind making up bottles one by one during the day but at night the length of time needed to make the bottles up according to the instructions is so time consuming and hard when Charlie is hungry.

At the moment we are
Boiling kettle then leaving it cool for about 20 mins
Adding formula
Cooling in jug of cold water

Is there no way we can prepare 2 Bottles to use during the night that could just be warmed up? Also what about when we want to go somewhere? How do we go about making a feed up then?

Who would have thought formula feeding could be so confusing. I know years ago people used to make up all their bottles for the day and just put them in the fridge wish we could do that now

Sorry cant help but what we do is.....

Pre boil water,
Once cooled we then pour into the bottles.
Put in the fridge. When baby. Wants a feed we warm it. Up and add. The formula.

I've. Done this since 2002 and on third baby and everything good.

Hope you can figure out the. Best way that works for you as a family x

Hi Nicksi, we had this issue when we first put dd onto formula.

Our formula said to make with water that had been boiled 30 mins before. This is a very long time to keep lo waiting when he/ she wants a feed. So we bought a flask, and fill it when the kettle water is 30 mins since boil.

Now our lo has been put onto Colief which has to be in the formula 30 mins b4 feeding to baby. I read the formula box carefully to see why I couldn't make up formula and store it in the fridge and the only reason given was hygiene. So, now we do make up bottles in advance. We store them on the top shelf of the fridge so nothing can drip onto them and in 2 months no problems. We only make up 6 at a time so they are less than 24 hours old. We are very careful to rotate them too so new ones go at the back as we make up fresh.

We warm the bottle in a jug of boiled water when she is ready to feed.

I well remember those first few days of FF, I felt a total failure for not being able to BF baby, was utterly shattered, kept loosing count when spooning the formula into the water and could never remember whether I had sterilised the bottles or not. Sometimes they got sterilised 2 or 3 times... Good luck, it will get easier! :hugs:

I used Hipp Organic for a short period (unfortunately it gave my daughter horrible reflux, so we had to switch), but we always pre-made the night bottles. It's recommended that you make them fresh (like with all formula) but you can pre-make them safely as well as long as they are cooled promptly. Someone on here called and spoke with the manufacturer and they said it's fine. I think it negates some of the benefits of the health bacteria in it, but you'll still be getting plenty in the other feeds. We pre-made them just before bed with boiled water that had been sitting for 30-40 min as per the package instructions and then cooled and refrigerated, then warmed in a bowl of boiling water when we needed them. And alternative, which is what I do for most day feeds now, is to fill up a flask (thermos) with boiled water before bed and then it should cool some in a few hours, then just make the bottle up when needed. You still have to add the powder and mix, but it saves you boiling the kettle and waiting 30-40 min for it to cool during the night.

We used to keep some warm water in a flask by the bed, pour into the bottle then add formula. Its not what guidelines say I know, but it worked for us. Also Hipp advise you make a bottle differently to guidelines anyway, as otherwise it kills the probiotic qualities.

We boil water and keep it in a thermos flask. When we need a bottle we microwave the required amount of water in a bottle for 20 seconds then affordable formula. We cool ours by putting the bottle in cold water. Alternatively you could get ready mixed hipp just for the night or for when out and about, it's 60p a carton xx

If you have some spare cash buy the Tommee Tippee perfect prep. It prepares a bottle for you at the correct temperature in 2 minutes flat. Easy peasy.
If you don't have 100 pounds spare then what I would do would be to boil the kettle in the morning, wait 20 minutes, mix up your daytime bottles, flash cool them in really cold water and then stick them in the fridge. warm in hot water when you need them. At night use cartons. So much easier!

If you are in and you want to make bottles as you need them then keep an eye on how long it has been since the last feed. If LO usually goes 3 hours then boil the kettle after 2 hours, let it cool for 30 minutes, make up your bottle and it ought to be cool enough to drink when the 3 hours is up.

When you want to go somewhere you have three options. The safest option is to use cartons. The second option is to take the powder in a special sterile container and a flask of hot boiled water, make the feed up as you need and cool with cold water. This is the most tricky option. The third option is to make the bottle at home and keep in the fridge and buy an insulated baby bottle holder to keep it cold in your bag then ask for hot water when you need to warm it. With a newborn I think cartons are the best option or those diddy little bottles you get in the starter packs.

What we do is boil the kettle then let it cool. When it comes to making a bottle, pour half to 3/4 of the cold water in the bottle, then boil some fresh to top it up to the correct temperature. Add formula, bang an instant bottle with no waiting. I got that tip on here, its been a life-saver!!

Aphrodite, with 3/4 of the bottle being cold water, will it still be 70 degrees when you add the water? I thought that was the most important thing.

Interestingly I have read elsewhere that Hipp have taken the probiotics out of their milk due to the Department of Health telling them to do so. They are still calling the stuff "combiotik" because that is a word that doesn't mean anything, but due to false claims about the benefits of the probiotic stuff apparently and the potential risks due to not making the formula according to department of health guidelines, the probiotic stuff isn't being added any more. Just thought Hipp customers might like to know this - I know you can't trust everything you read online but it is useful to know anyway.

Im not sure kat. Our milk also has tk cool for 30 minutes so I figured thks was a good cheat. I've done it with normal formula too he seems ok.....

Ive been using hipp for 2 months now and the way i make it is

Sterilise bottles
Pour boiled water thats cooled for a bit into bottles
Leave bottles on side until needed.
When bubs wants feeding i pop bottle in microwave for 20 secs ( you could warm in jug obviously personal preferance)
Then add powder shake n feed.

Hipp recommend you make bottles up with water between 40-50 degrees so unlike other formulas you cant premake as the waters not hot enough to kill the bacteria.

I find the way i do it the quickest and simplist way!

HTH x

The water wont be 70 degrees so it wont kill the bacteria BUT aslong as baby drinks it straight away theres no time for bacteria to breed. Would be different if u made it and left it for hours.
