His leg has been amputated my poor puppy

My reo got off his line and went running i didnt have a clue he wasnt there i always check on him and hes always happy playing outside but yesterday when i went outside his line was there but no lovely puppy reo!! i got his lead and went looking after 20mins of searching i found him layed on the floor at the side of a road bleeding he couldnt walk i took him into to the emergency animal hospital they took an xray and phoned me to say his right hind leg has been shattered in 5 places from his thigh bone down to his knee from a force of a car, the only choice was to amputate the leg!! Hes such a friendly puppy i cant believe this has happened to him i wont know how he his until 12pm today, i havent slept all night worrying about him i really hope hes ok!?
the thing that me and DH found strange about how he went running is the fact that theres no exit in the garden but the gate which he cant open cos its really tall and his line was still in the garden as if hes had it taken off by someone we think that maybe someone tried taking him he is a very trusting dog and super friendly!!
Back to the subject of my lovely little reo im worried how he will cope and is there anything i can do or expect!!

ive bought him new toys and blankets and pillows to replace his old ones what else can i do i just want him to be happy thats all

so heres an update if anyone is intrested hes home and is on pain killers hes walking round and running as normal which i was shocked by, but im so proud of him hes soo brave!! weve been told by the police that the same thing has happened to two cats and a kitten is still in hospital and isnt likely to pull through this has all happened round our area so are looking for a man who they think is responsible for what is happening to these little animals! weve told our neighbour to keep his little puppy indoors for safety!!

but reo is doing fine now and is happy at home, hes not happy about the fur been taken off of part of his back but it will be back soon, he has an appointment on tuesday for a check to see how he is!!
im just so happy hes home with me, but when i find out whos done this DH will be doing the same to them but worse

Glad to hear he is doing well, dog survive so well on three legs and there are lots of 'tripod' pets out there! Just treat him as normal.

Poor Reo! Glad he's back at home. I agree with hypnorm, dogs do really well on three legs, once he learns how to take corners you won't be able to stop him! Just make sure he's not allowed to gain to much weight in the future as this will place an extra strain on his joints.

Cool, my friends have two huskies,
Have the vets mentioned about restricted exercise? Being on 3 leg will put added stress on them as he is still young, so he should make you aware not to walk him excessively or do strenuous play.
They can damage their growth plates.

Im going back on tuesday soo will probly find out alot more they said that he needs alot of rest and only take him in the garden on the lead soo he can do his business and bring him back in until hes fully better! Hes already turning corners and walks round in circles hes just like before but not jumping and having lots of rest
Im just relieved hes still here with us he means everything to me and dh and lo

Sooo ive just realised i never updated well yesterday he had his stitches out and they said his wound has healed nicely and has finished his pain killers and antibiotics course and is doing fine and is coping really well and wont need a follow up appointment

Ahhh bless him!! There are some evil people about and I hope they find out who did this and cut his leg off!!!!
