Honest Opinions on Lola please!

I'm expecting a baby girl in April and my husband and I have had the name Lola picked out for months. We both absolutely love it and as my OH is South American, another reason we like it is because it is Spanish. However, we have made the silly error of telling people the name and I'd say about half the people we have told have not given us a very positive reaction, usually linking the name with strippers, promiscuity, the Kinks song and that awful woman from Eurotrash. What does everyone on here think? I absolutely love the name but I don't want my daughter to be forever associated with stripping. Also, I saw the new Renault Twingo advert on TV last night which has a stripper called Lola in in as well. Honest opinions please!!!

I love the name Lola!! I wouldn't associate it with anything bad at all.

We had the same when we started talking about boys names, we were set on a girls name but undecided on a boys one (we didn't find out the sex of the baby before the birth). We spoke to friends & family about it and they all had different opinions, so in the end OH and I settled on a name at the 20 week scan and told no one!!

I don't think of anything bad when I hear the name lola!!!

You always get the odd person who sticks their nose in!! Forget About them use it if it's the right choice for you x

I think it's a really pretty name and for me there are no bad associations either. But I think babies make their names their own anyway and once she comes along, noone will think 'stripper', they'll all think 'that beautiful little girl'. So don't worry too much about what people say now.

I don't think there are any bad associations with Lola nowadays. Out of interest, is this a generational thing, ie are all the people giving you negative feedback older? Anyway I think they are wrong and it's very cute. I love the name: we called one of our cats Lola.

I think Lola is a sweet name - just makes me think of charlie and lola the kids programme, but thats not a bad thing - i enjoy a bit of charlie and lola.

Forgot to add we got a lot of stick because we named our little girl Stevie (we are both massive Stevie Wonder fans). I wish I had never told people either as we got lots of comments about it being a 'boys name' and 'did we name her after Steve Irwin!!!' but we didn't care in the end. We love it and it suits her. Stick to your guns X

Lola is a very pretty name and I wouldn't think of anything bad in connection to it. Maybe because it is what I called my bunny!

Well you wanted honest opinions right?

Here are the things that come to mind when i hear the name Lola:

1.) The song "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow - Lola was a showgirl
2.) The name of Madonna's daughter (Lourdes' nickname is Lola)
3.) The cartoon "Charlie & Lola"
4.) Similar to "Lolita" which is used to describe a sexually promiscuous girl

From reading the other posts.... i also get the impression it is a common stripper name, the name of a "tranny" in some song, and a common name for pets.

However, I think Lola is a cute name.... and very pretty. All names have some association with something. I'm sure once she is named Lola, everyone will like the name bc they will associate it with your pretty little baby!

its Sarah Cox's daughters name- Lola Rose, thats quite a common combination..

Lola is my number one at the moment, I love it, and thinks its very pretty, and definately not too complicated (hated the thought of my child having to spell there name every day for the rest of their life)

The only things people have said to me are the kids cartoon 'Charlie and Lola' but in that the little girl Lola is very cute, and that old song 'Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl..'

But if you like it, you should go for it. No one ever seems to give great reactions with names I've found. Its such a personal decision, it would be quite weird if everyone I told loved every name I liked.
