Housework tips

We have a cleaner for two hours every fortnight. We work full time so don't make mess during the week days and found we were spending time doing chores at the weekend instead of doing nice things together!

Day to day we make sure that:

~there are never dishes in the sink
~dry dishes are out away
~surfaces are wiped
~there isn't too much mess around (post, books etc)
~LO's toys are put away in their boxes once he is in bed

When Alma was a month old I couldn't get anything done!
The entire house was a hole!!
Now she is 7 months I can do a lot more..

I put her in her swing and sing/dance whilst I tidy..

Our living room I decluttered and now nothing extra
is being added unless something else is taken away.

If the kids bring toys down from upstairs they have to
take them back up before they go to bed.

We have a cordless dyson and I hoover downstairs, the
stairs and landing then put it back to charge.

I wipe down the bathroom when I go and keep cleaning
products in there.. where the kids cant reach of course.

We bought a small tumble drier.

The house is no where near where I want it to be
but it gets better with each month she gets older

xx

I should also mention that I really do a bare minimum of tidying because our house is a hole. I can't do much about most of it because it's all my in-law's clutter, as MIL is a pack rat. She actually asked me to save some plastic baby food tubs because "they might come in handy for something someday."

I make sure the dishes are done and the small sections of counter that I manage to keep clear for cooking our meals stay clean and wiped. Doing it throughout each day keeps it from piling up.

I sweep and mop the parts of the hardwood I can get to around the clutter and run the vacuum. I try to do this once a week. At the very least, on a day to day basis, I try to get any bits up that LO might put in his mouth.

Once a week, I give the bathroom a decent cleaning, though I try to keep the counter/sink wiped after each use.

Aside from that, I try to put things where they belong right away so I don't have to go back and deal with as much picking up later. If I see some trash on my way to the kitchen I'll grab it (whole family will just leave wrappers wherever). IF I have a few minutes at random I'll gather recyclables and put them in the outside bins we have.

I have a very manageable routine, I do a deep clean every Monday and try and keep on top of everything else each day. It's easier for me to pull the Hoover out for 10 minutes and do all the floors once a day than try and brush up multiple times. I also keep flash wipes in the bathrooms so I can do a quick wipe to tidy things up and stop the sinks and toilets getting grubby. My dad always told me to "never make a wasted trip" :haha: so I try to multitask as much as possible, like if I'm heading to my bedroom for something I'll stop into ds's room and grab his washing or do a quick tidy in the bathroom. All dishes go straight into the dishwasher and I sort washing on the line when dd is napping and DS is playing in the garden. It probably sounds like I do an awful lot of cleaning but I really don't, it's literally minutes at a time so I can play with the littlies as much as I can, and on the rare event of both babies napping at the same time I can sit with a guilt free coffee and treat

I try to keep on top of the tidying every day through good habits, like making the beds and tidying upstairs before coming downstairs for the day, emptying the dishwasher while the kids are finishing their breakfasts, and a general tidy-up each evening when the kids go to bed (hubby helps, then we both sit down together, takes half an hour ) - toys in toy room, living room tidied, dishes done and kitchen tidied. The rest of the housework I split up into chunks - I aim to do it at the start of the week more as that's when I have more energy, plus it means I don't get sick of it because I'm not doing it all week:

Mon - dusting, sort and start washing, clean bathrooms.

Tue (DD is in nursery, so fit it around baby) - finish washing, hoovering (upstairs and down), wash downstairs floors and bathroom floors with steam mop.

Rest of week - ironing during nap time.

If it doesn't get done for whatever reason I just don't worry too much - sometimes I do some on sat morning while hubby looks after the kids if I'm a bit behind, bit I try not to - weekends are family time and I need a break too!
