Hi Im coming to the end of my maternity leave now and work are trying to make arrangements to change my hours to part time but it isn't looking likely.

My partner works in excess of 40hrs a week and brings home around £250 a week.

I was wondering, would we be entitled to housing benefit if I didnt go back to work? We would not be able to afford the rent and all the other bills if I wasn't working but it would only be a stop gap whilst looking for other employment. Not sure if Housing Benefit is allowed when one of you is working?

Any help would be much appreciated x

If you look at your local council there is sometimes an online benefit calculator, as long as your oh doesnt earn over a certain amount you should get help with housing benefit.
Dont forget that also if your oh is working you can put a claim in for working tax credits.

Hi

You maybe entitled to some HB but very unlikely you will get full HB also the rate will depend on what size property you have and how many people are living in the property so if you only need a 2 bed but are living in a 3 bed you would only get HB rate for 2 bed if entitled to anything.

I am a homeless officer and our Housing benefit advice is at our town hall, i would contact your local council and ask- anything worth a try.

xx

I get 128pw and only get £20 discount of my HB I also pay full council tax. I only have around 52 per week after paying these.
Not nearly enough to cover all my other costs. They don't take other outgoings into account as they don't care. But you'll be entitled to working tax credits surely?
