Housing Benefits.

How exactly does this work? In short, do we find a place of our own which accepts DSS and then ring and sort it out? And they then pay a percentage of the Rent?

Just want to get a better idea of it as it sounds like a much better option than Homes 4 You where the Council find one themselves.

Seen a really nice 2 bed Apartment that is DSS Considered...

Thanks.

You have to apply for the place and then apply for housing benefit. We had to find the deposit and first months rent ourselves as we are still waiting for benefit to be paid.

You will not be able to apply for the housing benefit until you are renting the house. You should however be able to ring up your local council office & ask them how much they will pay for a 2 bed or 3 bed or whatever it is you are looking for, They usually give you a price of what they will go upto for your circumstance if you get me.
Then you have to find a house you want, If you are accepted for it & have a moving in date you can then apply for the housing benefit. So basically you have to accept the house before the rent will even be considered, In some cases you also have to be living in the house too or be due to move in within so many days, Each council is diff.

mine pay some to me not a lot cos oh works but it was sorted within a wk

Ok, so find a place first, discuss with landlord to see if happy, possibly get the first months up front, move in, ring the office...

If u find a place u can get whats called a predemernation form which the housing benefit will tell u how much u will get if u take the house ...that way u kno u can afford it

u dont have to have moved in but u have to have been accpeted on the house! some councils have a sceme to help u pay the 1st months rent and deposit to! x

My friend just moved into a new house with her daughter, she had to get the month's rent and the same deposit before she could move in.. but she couldn't get housing benefit until she moved in. :dohh: I can see why they do it like that, but it makes things a bit difficult!

You need to be living in the house before they give you any housing benefit hun, in Wales they pay £88 per week, thats the max so if your rent is more than that, you have to find the rest of the money yourself.

Yeah I live down in Barry. We have seen a nice one for £500. And you say £88? Is that THE highest? Or does it go by circumstances? That's around £352 they will pay a Month otherwise.

it depends on the area on how much you get each area is differnt you need to ring the council! you also need to check with the land lord that they accept houseing benifit!

It depends on your area, I was just saying that in Wales where we are they will only pay £88 at max :) Your better off phoning them up and asking how much they would be willing to pay

Yep which is why i said earlier hun if you ring the council 1st as each area & council varies & yes your circumstances/money , They can give you a figure of what they will pay then anything over that you have to pay yourself. A lot of homes you have to pay a month in advance & a months deposit or there abouts. So its alot of money when you just haven't got it, Our local council have started paying peoples deposits though so maybe its worth asking if yours does this too. Hopefully you get it sorted hun x
