hi girls

Im very confused as to how to make up my bottles. Ive been pre filling them with cooled boiled water and adding formula as needed in the day- which is great- really convenient. My sister in law did this and at the time when she told me i was desperate for advice on how to do it.

however ive been researching and im starting to get the impression this is not the best way as the formula needs to go into hot water.

Ive got a flask now which i have filled with boiled water and decided to measure out as needed then cool the bottle down.

I then realised that i might have to steralise each bottle every feed? i have a microwave steriliser and once opened i guess i shouldnt use the other stuff in there?

seems like when you simplify one bit the other bit gets more difficult and vice versa.

can i seal up the bottles with tops and leave them out or does that make them unsterile?

soooo confused now.

need some thoughts!

The way i did it was to sterilise all the bottles at the same time.

Then while this was happening i boiled the kettle.

Then when the kettle water had cooled and the steriliser had finished i filled the bottles with the amount of water.

Then left them on the side.

Then when the milk monster was hingry i just added the powder and warmed in needed and popped it in her mouth

this is exactly what i have been doing and works great for me but doesnt the water have to be hot to kill the bacteria in the milk powder?

No not at all.

The powder is sterile.

Bacteria starts to breed when the bottle is left to sit out say if baby has had 2 oz from a 4 oz bottle and its left on the side thats when it becomes a bacteria breeder.

I think its 2 hours from when the feed is made up to when it no longer can be used and has to be thrown away.

The way your doing it is fab, the 'rules' change all the time but as long as your LO is well then its all good.

its so confusing- like a jigsaw puzzle!

The way I have been doing it works so well for me as i like to be organised- I really want to continue with it!

You do it the way you want too.

:hugs:

I know its a minefield.

Technically the powder is not sterile, which is why it is recommended that you do add it to water over 70C, however a lot of people add it to cooled water and its been just fine.
You could always add the powder to a couple oz of hot water then top up with previously cooled down boiled water. That way its ready quick plus you are adding to hot water if you are concerned about adding powder to cooled water.

should say, I sterilise bottles all in one go, then make them up but leave them unfilled. I then either make fresh or mak as above so powder is added to hot water. As far as I am concerned if the bottles are made and sealed then surely they're still sterile!?

Same here, apart from I warm the water first then add powder, shake and feed! I find it dissolves quicker that way.

I do it the same way as my mum, MIL etc.

Sterilise bottles, boil water, pour boiling water in to bottles, add formula, shake and bung in the fridge to cool.

When I need a bottle, I then get one out and put it hot water for a minute or 10 secs in the microwave. HTH.

Thats the way i've been doing it, my mum did it with us, my sister also did it with her two,

Run the tap till the water is warm. Fill up the bottle to the desired amount. Add the appropriate amount of powder. Wash bottle in soap and water as soon as he's done.
No boiling, no sterilizing.
