Harvey has had trouble going to the loo for about 6-8 weeks now,he does go but really struggles. He screams in agony when he tries to go.The docs have tried him on Lactulose and Movicol(he won't take this) the lactulose has stopped working,at one point it helped.I can't help feeling the docs are treating the symptom rather than dealing with the reason behind it....would you kick up a fuss?or am I just being a paranoid 1st time mum? :flower:
xxx

have you tried having a word with your HV, i find my HV went above the doctor when i had any problems. it does sound to me that your doc is just treating the symptoms, and if theres a reason behind it its just going to come back isnt it?? id hve a word with the HV. if not kick up a fuss :D x

I haven't tried her yet because the doc said she can only advise me on diet...but he has plenty of fruit and veg in his diet..so i don't know could be causing it.xx

This happened to my son at the same age and it was heartbreaking he used to go red in the face and scream the house down and when he did go they were like adult sized poo you would not think it came from a child ! he was exactly the same age as Harvey maybe a tad younger ...

I went to the Drs and and they did the same and it never seemed to work in the end i sorted it myself with plenty of fresh orange every morning (he had veg every day i know all mummies say this but finley really did ) so this wasnt a problem an d i upped his fruit and gave him syrup of figs it did work but when fin turned about 3 he started getting constipated again to the point he was passing soft stools having accidents all the time when he was fully trained and i went to the dr and demanded i see someone to which he referred me to a consultant who said straight away his muscles in his bowel are not very useful to say the least to they arent pushing his poo out.

I know this is not a straight answer for you but i wanted to tell you so you know if i was you and i saw in heinsight i would have gone to the drs and got it sorted sooner as oppose to later , Harvey is still young enough to not realise with nappies etc , if it gets to when they are 3/4 its hard work lol x

If you feel its not working and he is in pain id defo take him and suggest maybe seeing someone else who can help x

Also i did find lactulose is rubbish but movicol is really good its a shame he wont take it because it did help with fin we had to completely flush his system out with it, he wont take it in water though i add juice to it :)

Sorry this is soooo long hope you get it sorted xxxx

id still have a word with her if you can hun, i kno its a different problem but when my little brother had serious reflux last year the doctor tried palmin us of with this and that, my mum went to our HV and she went above him and contacted the hosp and he then went to see a peadiatrician.. worth a try. if youve tried diet and medicines to help him and neither work, then theres something not right. he's ur son and if ur worried dont let the docs push u over xx

The consultant told me if he has a good diet then its more than likely a problem with his bowel somewhere, it wont be anything serious it will be something they can fix with some sort of medicine. But they did ask me all sort of interesting questions even about childbirth which you would never have linked to him having a problem, defo worth going as one of the questions they ask may relate to your birth with Harvey you just never know x

that is exactly how Harvey is when he tries to go,its horrible seeing him in so much pain  did they do anything about the fact your son's bowel muscles weren't doing what they should?xx

Dec has been having the same problem for almost a year now :( But the good thing is my Doc referred us to the hospital 1 month after his symptons appeared, he has now been attending the hospital every 8-10 weeks and they still cant find a problem, he has had scans, xrays and been poked and prodded to within an inch of his life :( He has has Movicol, lactoluse and dulcolax nothing has worked :( The movicol did work for a bit but it seemed to suddenly stop. The only answers I have been given is that some kids are prone to chronic constapation, my oldest boy had it to and he attended the hospital for 1.5 years until it suddenly settled by itself.

The only thing I can say is insist on a hospital appointment, thats they only way they can assess him, Dec has had 2 xrays because the consultant said if he is constapated for to long there is a chance that he could get a blockage :(

It is hearbreaking I have had times were I have had to sit in the bathroom with Dec while he screams in pain while doing a poo, we have even had times were he has refused to go to the toilet. Dec also has cream for his bottom because it becomes quite sore and bleeds alot :(

Good luck hun, I hope someone can sort your little man soon x x

I will ring the HV on monday, see if she can come and see us :)

Harvey had a partical exchange transfusion when he was 2 days old,I've mentioned that to the docs in case it might be related, but he says it isn't.xx

The consultant was fantastic she felt his lower tummy and even said "my word Finley there is alot of poo in there" lol , she could even feel it so we knew it was bad , she suggested we up the dose of movicol to twice a day and completely flush him out and then when he has been flushed out to keep him on one a day and the muscles will train themselves eventually and then he will pass soft sausage like stools then we can wean him off it x

This was an experience , we never thought the problem was constipation but it had got that bad that only soft stools were passing through his body around the hard stools so he was having accidents 15-20 times a day and once explained to us it seemed so obvious, his muscles werent working properly to push the hard stools out therefore only soft can come out and she said he wouldnt have known and could not help it either. Anyway we started him on the two sachets a day and after about a week he had 2 full days of being constantly on the toilet and he did have a good clear out, he is still on two a day i dont think his muscle is fully working yet but i can definitely see such a difference with him x

Most of all it needs sorting because if its hurting him he will start not wanting to go then when you come to potty train it will be a nightmare for you because he wont do it :(

This is of course if its the same problem and he is not just going through a stage of being constipated but i do have to say it sounds exactly the same as fin was. If i were you i think i would try with the movicol again one sachet a day (or whatever the dr prescribed~) in some juice for a week and see if that does anything in the meantime i would book a drs app and ask to see a consultant ans when you go if the movicol has not worked they cant palm you off with it you can say well ive tried it and its not worked so i need something else.
x

Also does he has Bread? i did find white bread made Fin worse, when i put him in wholemeal i saw a slight improvement , he used to have and still does have weetabix every morning long with an actimel , movicol and fresh orange and im finding this combination is the only one that really works for him. x

they originally said it was a fissure as he was bleeding, but we kept him on lactulose for it to heal...i don''t think these docs know what they are doing...x

he has always been on wholemeal bread, but just lately he won't eat bread at all.xx

yeh i found the drs useless it really eased my mind seeing a consultant she was brilliant , brilliant with him and knew exactly what we were talking about, she eliminated everything before the diagnosis and most of all she took the time to listen to us where as our dr wouldnt xx

Fin has been a different child since we worked out the problem x

Will see if i can push the HV to do something, but if she doesn't god knows what I do then.xx

Think i would go to the dr and ask to be referred to a consultant as what he has given is just not working easier said than done as all drs are different mine was pretty dosile anything for an easier life to be fair lol.

My aunty is a HV and not mine and i found them both pretty useless like you said before they advise on diet more than anything but yours maybe diff to mine again xx

Just spoken to a friend who's soon is having problems with walking...anywho..she saw the HV about it and was told the HV can only write to the GP..she can't make referrals herself...back to arguing with the GP then I guess
xx

oh dear :( you have to be firm with the Dr, he does not live with Harvey he doesnt see how it is affecting him ! Will he take Movicol in some juice instead of water? x

we tried it with juice too, when he wouldn't take water...still didn't want it.xx

must admit i wouldn't fancy it, Fin is a guzzle guts with his juice always has been so he doesnt notice lol xx i know one of the questions my consultant asked what did he pass his black nappy when born ? x
