Ihsan had mild cold symptoms about 5 weeks ago which I put down to teething as he always gets this cutting a new tooth and it was a molar this time. Then it seemed to turn into a cold, and then he got a cough 1month ago now. It has been only during the night mostly as he has a build up of mucus when lying down even if elevated slightly. I took him to the doctor last week just to have him checked as if anyone remembers I posted about how contageous pneumonia is as he visited his grandad who has this a few days before he got the cold symptoms, but the doc says its not in his chest only the back of his throat and no other symptoms that would make him think he would have caught pneumonia. They gave me saline nasal drops for him and that was it. Well for 2 nights he didn't cough at all then the last 2nights have been awful. Now its during the day too :( I was reading about something called 'walking pnemonia' where the child is still well enough to play and walk around and doesn't have all the other serious symptoms. I called the doctor this morning and they have no appointments today, however the doctor will call me later to talk. I am sitting here reading things and freaking out!

Has anyone else's lo had a cough thats lasted over a month? I tried cough syrup (tixylix, calcough etc) never made blind bit of difference. Other things we have tried- steamy showers with vapours, milk & honey drinks, soups, karvol vapour rub. nothing is helping the cough its only worse than better :nope: on the other hand he is sneezing alot and loads of gunk coming out today which is maybe good?! He is still eating well & wanting to go out but we are staying home today as he has hardly slept last night and I want him to rest.

Sorry this is sooo long, just wanted to give you the full picture :flower: Don't know what else to do...

my son had a cough for 5 weeks, i kept getin fobed off by the doctor sayin it could be just a viral infection and they can last anything up to 6-8weeks, as he didnt have a temperature or bein sick they basicaly didnt care ,soooo asked for a different doctor told her all about the other 1 not caring and that i was realy annoyed as my we man wasnt get much sleep as the cough was keepin him up, so she tried to listen to his chest but zak was having none of it lol but she give me an inhaler and it worked wonders, he hasnt coughed in about a month now xx

i also tried all the cough medicines from the chemist and honey and steam etc nothing worked before the inhaler x

Hi hunny
I went to the GP this morning for LO's cough and snot nose. She had a course of antibiotics for her chest 5 weeks ago and is still waking in the night with awful coughing.

She is also a snot bag all the time.

He listened to her chest and she was fine. He said to bring her back if it continues for another 2 weeks and or if she gets a temperature.

I use Karvol drops on her bed linen and put some in a hot water bowl in the bedroom to steam the room.

The nest thing for her cough so far is the Meltus liquid fro babies. It is better than the glycerol liquids as it has more of an effect rather than just a soothing effect.

It seems like Rhys has had a cold for weeks and I never know if it's just teething or if it is a cold but for the past few days he's been coughing at night as well, so I guess it has been a cold. To be honest I think he constantly teethes anyway so it could be a mixture. It's funny because I always think when Rhys is unwell that it does drag on a lot longer than it would for an adult, especially when it's cold-like symptoms. xx

Well the doctor phoned back and said to go in tomorrow morning but I am just not happy. He is practically coughing non-stop there is no way he will nap and it will likely be another night of barely sleeping. I guess if he gets worse or other symptoms appear I will be heading to out of hours GP later, I just wish he would stop coughing :(

Thank you for your experiences and suggestions xxx

I remember the last time Rhys had a cough and it kept him up through the night the doctor prescribed him child piritin which helped him sleep through it. He still coughed a bit through the night but he definitely slept better. xx

Rhys has never suffered with any allergies and the doctor still prescribed it just specifically to help him sleep. Just found the box, it's proper name is Chlorphenamine Maleate, it's worth a try asking your doctor anyway. xx

I know its too late in the day now but if you get the chance tomorrow it might be worth going to a health food shop and see what they can give you. I always try natural before going with chemist stuff and usually it works well. I can't think what its called at the moment but we've used some cough stuff thats worked really well at getting rid of the mucus etc.

Coughs can go on a bit at the this time of year and some children are more prone to them than others.

Just a word of warning - if you go to the out of hours GP they won't actually diagnose anything - all they do it prescribe something to make them comfortable through the night and advise you to go the your own GP the next day.

Ventolin & streroid inhalers are the only thing that helped in easing Omar's coughs. He also gets a sore throat & a viral infection everytime he starts teething. He's been coughing for almost 3 weeks now.

Hope Ihsan gets better soon hun xx

Glad to hear it is not just us.

LO has had a cough now for over 7 weeks. He has been Ill for 9 weeks now since he has been at nursery!!! He has got gunky eyes now too. He has had a course of antibiotics which haven't worked!!!

Am taking him back to the docs. He can't carry on as he is.

Maisies had it for nearly 2 weeks now too ! Its awful of a night shes just up constantly and im constantly on edge waiting to catch her incase she is sick she coughs that much! Debating whether its worth even going to the doctors or not because they never usually do anything

Thanks everyone, and sorry to hear some of your lo's are in the same boat its a shame for them theres not much you can do with a cough. I was just being extra worried this time round as Ihsan had been in close contact with his Grandad who had pnumonia. Its def not that though so thats a relief.

Anyway, I took him back to the docs today and she gave us a mild steroid nasal drop for bedtime only. I don't know if its a coincidence but last night I made soup with tonnes of celery, onion, carrot, turnip and tomato. He ate loads and after that I tried the Meltus that TU123 recommended thanks :) he was much better last night didn't cough much at all, still full of cold mind you.

Will also try the health shop next time thanks RachA. i'm all for natural remedies.

Hope all your lo's feel better soon xxxxx
