I am almost 6wks post op and haven't had my appt to discuss everything with the midwife yet but was wondering how long you need to wait after having a section before ttc again? Not sure I am ready for another yet whatever happens happens and I want to know how careful we need to be. We have never used condoms for the 5 yrs we had been dtd but we are now and we both HATE it :( just doesn't feel as intimate. More so this is a question of safety because I know uterus rupture is possible

I have a friend who got pregnant 6 months after her c-section. So far, everything is fine. She is 5 months now.

well really they like you to wait a year in order to heal properly however things happen my youngest is just over a year old and im 6 months pregnant and everythings fine ill be having my fourth csection x

In a perfect world they want 2 years between surgeries. So that means getting pregnant at 15 months after baby #1. Getting pregnant after 12 months, if healing is going well is acceptable but not perfect. Anything earlier just needs to be monitored.

It takes 7 years to completely heal from a c section. That's what most people don't realize. It may be ridiculous but to be totally safe the medical advise is to wait 2 years between surgeries.

thats interesting because i waited 7 years after my first one though not because of that but because i was very young when i had my first child but i do recall being told that it was pretty much like id never had a csection before because id waited that long x

I wasn't told to wait. I was only told to wait 12 months if I want to have a VBAC.

I wasn't told anything, and got pregnant when my LO was 3 months! My son was born 1 year 5 days after my daughter both by csection. I had no additional monitoring really, the midwife always asked me extra question in regard to my scar area but as all was fine I didn't see a consultant for this reason.
I was told I'd only have a 60% chance of VBAC tho, and if I was to try it it would be in a more controlled environment than a 'normal' labour. But I was a planned section anyway so this didn't bother me. Absolutely no problems with my second pregnancy, but he did arrive 2 weeks early :)

I think the real issue is when people want to do vbac. If its another section then it can be done a lot more safely under controlled settings. A vbac brings so many potential issues that they want the scar as healed as possible. To me that makes sense.

Talk to the midwife today and she said a yr and a half between pregnancies is ideal esp for a vbac but if you absolutely can't wait 1 yr so you could conceive 3months after your section.

I was told 18 months.

That's ridiculous?!?! I know people who've had sections and there's 12 -15 months between their children so they would have waited 3+ months, not long at all :)

I agree. 18 months is ridiculous.

its just what i was told.....by 3 separate consultants, at 3 hospitals:wacko:. but yes thats for a VBAC

If I was planning I'd rather be safe than sorry. There's no reason they are saying that for anything other than health reasons.

I have 2 friends who had there second sections within days of the one year mark from their first section. I myself have been ntnp since birth but now coming up to the six month mark from mine will be starting to ttc from my next cycle.

We waited 8 months... My doctor said 6 months was fine between births 18 months ouch! glad I dont have your doctor

not ridiculous, doctors don't say these things for fun. these people may have just been lucky! many consultants would have seen things that can go wrong first hand and they are here to look after you. 18 months isn't that long to wait, given u have had major abdominal surgery and I would personally leave it a little longer. I don't want to worry anyone who is already pregnant, but wish ppl would take the advice of drs over what a stranger has wrote on an internet forum! x

I was given no advice though, and there were never any dire warnings from my midwife or consultant?!

I second that! I just delivered at 39 weeks, 2 yrs 1 month after my previous section. I was the one told to wait 18 months....glad i did as my scar/uterus was so thin id have ruptured this time if id VBAC ed!!
