Leo has a history of starting to do a particular physical milestone and then stopping for a while... Crawling was an exception, however. With crawling, I could tell he was going to be an early crawler from early on and there was no back and forth on that one. He plowed straight through to crawling and was crawling by 5.5 months and a speed-crawler by 6 months. Then the back and forth pattern with lack of motivation/drive started to show up.
At less than 7 months, Leo pulled to stand. Then he stopped and didn't do it for quite a while. When he started doing it again, it was quite a while before he was cruising. Once he was cruising, he didn't really care much for it so hardly did it at all. Then he hit a point where he was cruising a bit more and climbing a ton. His skills improved to the point where if you went to set him down, he would stand instead of sit. Or he would go on all fours (feet and hands) and then push to standing. He was pretty into it for about a week. Then he stopped. Now at a couple weeks shy of his first birthday, it seems like it's been a while since he has stood unassisted. He also hardly cruises and climbing has decreased. The other day, however, he was about a step away from where he wanted to be and it looked like he "accidentally" took an unassisted step.
So to me it looks like if he were driven to walk, he would be taking unassisted steps. He doesn't care about walking, however, and he has lost interest in the pre-walking skills he had been working on. It looks to me that he will just be content with crawling until one day he decides to start working on standing again and then stepping after that. A couple weeks ago I was thinking that perhaps he'd be taking independent steps by his birthday. It seems that's no longer the case. How long do you think it will be until he is walking?
My first child's crawling and walking personality was so different from my second child's that I have no comparison!
