How many diapers do newborns go through per day? Also, how long did your LO stay in the smallest size diaper before outgrowing them?

We're trying to stock up on some essentials before baby arrives and I have absolutely no clue!

In the first week or so, you'll start out with probably 4 or 5 a day as their systems start going. After that, the average for a healthy newborn/infant is 6-10 diapers per day. Some days you may go through more or go through fewer... but that's the average. Just assume they're going to need a diaper change every time they're fed! That's usually about the time my son would dirty his diaper. lol

As far as size, that's going to be totally dependent on your LO. My son was born a tad early, so he was in newborn diapers for almost 5 weeks before moving up. I would probably just assume at least one month. If you end up with excess newborn diapers, you can always find someone willing to buy them from you.

I found that when i breast fed he pooped a whole lot more than when i bottle fed. I think easily 10+ in a day in the first week.

I would average 10-12 / day, especially if they're bf'ing. How long they're in the smallest size really depends on how big they are when born. My 1st 3 were all 7 lb something, they were in sz 1 for a month /6 wks. My 4 th was almost 10 lbs, went straight to sz 2 when we got home from the hospital. If you look on the diaper pkg, it will give you a weight range, but I always switched before they got to the top weight for each sz, usually because they were wetting through or having constant blowouts.

From what I remember mine went through 8-10 diapers a day ( I was bf'ing). My second dd was in newborn diapers for 2-3 weeks, I don't remember about the other sizes but she was in size 3 at 6 months and was in size 3 for a longest time and so was my first dd.

I would have to say about 8-10 diapers a day, but for pee not for poop. I have the opposite with my dd. when she was on breast milk only, she only pooped like once every 10 days. The dr said its because it's so high in nutrients there is hardly no waste, it's all absorbed by their body. But I did change her at every feeding because she was wet, so every 2-3 hours.

I would say 6-12 diapers a day it all depends. As far as the newborn diapers go I wouldn't buy many. My baby was 7lbs14oz, newborn diapers only go up to 8lbs I believe. I wouldn't stockpile newborn I'd get size 1. If your baby is tiny you can always send someone to target for another pack or two. Additionally newborn diapers have more in the pack than larger sizes so don't go to crazy.

Every one here seems to agree that about 10/day is the average. Possibly more if breastfeeding.
the size does depend on your lo. My first wore newborns for about a week, my second didn't even wear newborns at the hospital, the nurses had to find size 1 for him!
check the weight size on the package, and remember if you buy big and keep receipts u can exchange them for the sizes u need.

My son was at least 12 diapers a day for the first month, but he was breastfeeding every hour to hour and a half 24-7 for that time. He was also an early baby, and at 5lbs, he stayed in the newborn size for 6+ weeks. We even tried some preemie diapers since the newborn diapers were still a little loose around the legs and waist. With that said, I agree with others that you shouldn't stock up on the newborn size. I was surprised to have an early, small baby, but most full term babies won't be in the newborn size for long.

We went through about 10 diapers a day. My daughter was about 4 months when she was finally out of newborn diapers, but she was born at only 2 pounds.

Thanks, Ladies! We've been stocking up on sizes 1 and 2. Both my husband and I were over 9lbs when we were born (I was over 10!), so I'm expecting a large baby. I actually didn't even see any "Newborn" size diapers (pampers) when I was shopping.

About 8-10 nappies/day ... but how long they'll be in each size is much harder to answer. My boy was in newborn size for a while, but then only in the 2nd size for about 2weeks before moving on. Depends on baby's weight / size / how frequently they pee / brand of nappy etc. He was long and skinny and some brands really suited him and others didn't - and the best brand on one size wasn't necessarily the best on the next.

This time I'm buying a few different brand packs of first size but not too many as it's not too far to send my husband out to buy more of whatever suits baby best in whatever size I need.

My girls also filled their nappies a lot more when breast fed than bottle fed, I'd say at least 10+ nappies a day. Both of mine were quite small babies so I used tiny baby nappies for about 3-4 weeks before changing to newborn, about a month then moving on again to another size.

My youngest is now 9 months and she still manages to get through about 8+ nappies a day, yesterday she pooped 4 times, plus wet nappies!

I think we pretty much changed our daughter's diaper every feeding... so everyone is right, 8+ diapers a day. I wouldn't buy a box of newborn diapers though. I bought a bag of them and then moved up to size 1. My daughter was born 7Ibs 11oz.
