Hey ladies, I just went for an early scan because of some pain but I was wondering how many ultrasounds do most women have during pregnancy? I have read that most only get one at 20 weeks, but it seems like more from the boards here. Thanks!

LOL yep people on this forum get far far far more then the norm.....

In Canada it is standard to just get one between 18-20 weeks however more are offered if there's an indication eg in the first trimester scans are given for dating if the mother in unsure of dates, for women with ectopic pregnancy symptoms, and for the NT scan if they want to do the genetic testing. Then later on scans are only done if there is concern regarding the baby's well being.

In England you get one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks, sometimes you get a growth scan after 30 weeks if you are at risk of a small or large baby.

It's usually just two, but I get one every month, because I'm at high risk.

Yeah in the UK we get a Dating/NT Scan at 12weeks and then a more detailed scan between 20-22wks depending on what part of the country you live in.

UK standard is 2.

I think the US standard is 2 or 3, but I am super high risk so I get them weekly from week 5 up to week 10, then again at week 12, and then they might stop.

UK as said is 2. However you can have private scans which you pay for =)

This really varies by your insurance and your provider. In my 6 pregnancies (3 different states, 5 different insurance companies), I have only been scheduled for 1 clinical ultrasound per pregnancy, unless something goes wrong.

Two of my providers have had in office machines--with my son they did one quick scan at 9 weeks in office in addition to the 20 week clinical scan. My current MW has an in office machine and she does a quick scan at every appointment--but no measurements or dating, just look at the HB and say hello to baby.

Thanks ladies for you answers. This gives me a much better idea of how many scans to expect.
