Just curious because the healthcare provider billed my insurance company with a bill of around $1700 for an anatomy scan and an internal ultrasound for cervical length check. The claim is still in process but I am still wondering if it is this much expensive.

I have no idea on the actual costs in different counties etc but I have to pay $165 on the day and get a little but back from Medicare. I don't know how much the actual scan is though all up?
Normally I just go through places that bulk bill and you don't have to pay but the place I'm getting it done at you get to watch the whole thing on your own screen tv above your head :)

I'm not sure how much mine was exactly but I had to pay about $100 after insurance. $1700 sheesh that sounds crazy expensive... I had no idea these scans and tests cost so much! (I had my first in the UK - so not used to all these bills!)

Edit: checked my bill and it says the total was just under $1000 for my anatomy scan. So glad I didn't have to pay all of that...

Oh no doubt in my mind that it is over a thousand! I seen the bill for just my pap and it was almost $800 before insurance!

I am kind of interested in knowing mine now. I haven't gotten an itemized bill, but the total out of pocket, not covered by insurance, bill from seeing my ob-gyn (which includes a visit every month for the first 7 monthsish and then every 2 weeks until birth and one scan) is $1,900 so I am wondering how that breaks down. I think I will ask next time. :)

im in us and my insurance was billed $348 for scan alone not counting dr fees, etc. the cervical scan is an additional like $240 if i am reading my other bills right. did you have labs or anything else that appt?

I'm glad we have free healthcare. Sounds very expensive to have a baby in America (or other places where healthcare isn't free!)

That seems crazy expensive. Yeah, we have the NHS in this country, but you can still choose to pay for a private scan. And I just looked it up and an anomaly scan would only cost £159 if you paid for it. Where on earth are they getting such high figures from?

That does seem really high as like Celesse said it's free here but if for some reason you went private it's no where near that much.

But if your insurance is paying it does it matter? Shouldn't they be the ones querying it?

I'm in the US and I have no insurance at the moment, I go for my anatomy scan next week, and it's $845 for the ultrasound. Not a fun price to pay, right before Christmas!

This will depend on lots of things, they can bill the insurance whatever amount they want, but if they are contracted for only a certain amount, thats all they will get paid. Your portion will either be part of your deductible, or coinsurance most likely..the charges the provider bills are ridiculous alot of the times, for example, i had an ER visit with an US and labwork done, and one of my bills they sent to my insurance was for 3100.00...but they only "allow" an amount of 1500.00..of which my coinsurance is 20%, so about 310.00ish dollars was my bill...much better than 3100.00..but its still shocking to see that amount come in!

hmm.. I am in US and yes healthcare here is pretty much expensive. I had another anatomy scan this week at 21+3 as the docs were not able to see much at 18+3. Another bill is on my way :haha:

Yes they will definitely pay a part. But i was shocked on how they billed so much to the insurance company. This is from a covered in-network hospital

It is definitely ridiculous how high priced everything is here in the US. Over priced actually. My deductible is $3,000 so I have to pay for everything (including full price on prescriptions) until my deductible is met. The insurance covers 100% after that. This year is the first year I have actually met my deductible and I didn't meet it until the end of November so it's getting ready to start all over again!

I also want to add that I ended up paying over $800 out of pocket for my bloodwork for my first prenatal appointment.

my coverage is actually changing to something similar in january, they had a traditional PPO plan, where you pay X dollars for a dr's visit, x for a specialist, and copays on your Rx medications...but theyre changing to everything goes to deductible (but at least they are doing a HRA account, so they apply the money from that first that they put into it before i pay out of pocket)...but it still sucks

I'm guessing that an HRA is similar to an HSA account? I have a HSA (Health savings) account and it's nice to get a tax break on all of the money you spend on medical expenses, buuuttt... I would still take better insurance coverage any day! :) It would probably cost $1000 a month though. :haha:

Its similar, but instead of me putting money into the account, my employer puts in a set amount (for me and DH i believe $1500) for claims to pull from first...no tax break, but thats 1500 i dont have to cover myself...so its nice

Yikes!!! If I lived in the US I would be bankrupt. I get ultrasounds, tests, blood work, ER visits on a regular basis. We pay nothing for that. I live in Canada. That's too bad we all should get free health care. So dumb

It just seems insane you girls in the US get insurance but still have to pay such high amounts! How does anyone afford to have a baby there!

So without going off topic American ladies, what if you got pregnant and couldn't afford the bills? (Single mum, low income, not working, ill, etc any reason) Is there like a welfare thing in place? For free care? Or do you just get a bill and have to pay it off over months and months?
