as my DP already has three kids?

He is 20 years older than me and has three grown up boys. I have my first appointment at the infertility department next week. His SA was better than perfect, I'm ovulating fine on day 18, luteal phase 12 days, steady 30/31 day cycle.

How far will I get in the investigations before my DP having kids stop me getting more treatment (if in fact this is the case)?

I appreciate this is dependant on where I live but I would like a general idea

I may be wrong but any form treatment that needs funding your wont be entitled to.. as for anything else i dont no..

i may be wrong tho but from what i no and heard funded treatment your not entitled to.

hi jeanette, i too am going through the nhs for my fertility treatment and my partner is 14 years older than i am. he already has a 14 year old daughter and because of that ive been told that i cant have ivf on the nhs which is sad cause i really think i might end up needing it! my periods are regular ranging between 27-36 days and i do ovulate on my own. after i went for my first appointment at the fertility specialist which was last july they told me that i needed to have a hsg done, blood tests and a physical examination. DP had a SA done and that was a bit low but fine. i did the physical exam there n then n went to my gp and did the blood test about a week late. it took them 3 months for the hospital to fit me in for the hsg because they can only do it in a certain time of your monthly cycle. once i got all them done i had another appointment booked for october last year where they put me on 6 months of clomid and got me to do a day 21 bloodtest to see if it was working and it was so they left me on it. im now on my last cycle of clomid and so far its not worked so i have another appointment booked for april and my gp requested to the hospital that we discuss having laparascopy done next as my problem cant be to do with ovulation! i think they will allow iui on the nsh for couples who already have children (or 1 person has children) but i think its not fair at all how we cant have ivf done because our partners have children!!!

yeah we are entitled to funded treatment, just not ivf

Pretty sure the only thing they will not do for you is IVF. Think you could still have IUI but would have to pay for IVF yourself.

My partner has a child and is older than me and our PCT wouldn't give us anything.

whats a PCT? maybe it depends on where abouts you are from. all i know is that im from nottinghamshire and im not eligable for ivf on the nhs because my partner already has a child

iv heard the same in 3 places. I dont no for sure as i me or hubby dont have a child. but iv heard from friends who have gone for treatment and told no NHS wont help them

My partner has low sperm count and as far as i'm aware im fine. He had IVF previously and has a kiddy. If we cant get anywhere naturally, I dont know what we'll do. I think it's disgraceful that people are robbed this help and opportnity!

Welcome to what it's like being in America. Not fun. Unless you've won the lottery here and have an employer who picked a plan that covers fertility treatment, you're on your own. Even if you've got no kids, it doesn't matter. Something like 40% of the people here have no coverage for anything at all and can't even go to the doctor until it's a life-or-death emergency trip to the ER. It's nuts.

There's been debate for a while here over whether or not any fertility treatment stuff should be required to be covered. On the one hand, it's not vital to someone staying alive. On the other hand, it's a part of the body that's not functioning right and we're supposed to have the reproductive rights to choose to have children or not. It's more like you have the right if you're rich or your body works right.

You should be entitled to standard blood tests, clomid and IUI but as you said this is dependant on where you live

My GP knows about my DP's situation and has quite happily referred me without me having to ask. I'm assuming from this that I will get all the investigations paid for, I'm pretty sure I don't need clomid as I ovulate fine on my own and we were discussing checking my tubes so I think thats covered too. I'm not sure about IUI or IVF but it seems that I'm unlikely to qualify for IVF at least. Let's hope I don't need it then.

It seems really unfair that I may be penalised for my choice of partner, after all it's me that is having trouble conceiving and therefore me who is childless and in need of treatment, rubbish!!!

My FS explained that because my OH has a child, my PCT won't fund IUI or IVF, but he then went to point out that if we moved a few miles south to a different PCT he would then be able to treat us on the NHS. So if your FS gives you the answers that you don't want to hear, then I'd ask if there are other options, just in case.

Our PCT has recently changed their guidelines, previously if either partner previously had a child, you would not be entitled to IVF, but that has now been changed and everyone is entitled to one funded cycle. Still not great, but better than nothing....My DF has an 11 year old daughter, so I was really relieved to find that out. I rang my hospital to check, they were really helpful, why don' you give them a call?

Thanks Steph, I have my first fertility appointment on the 1st April so I will ask then, just thought I would see what I might be up against in advance

OMG! I had no idea this was the case. My partner already has children too and we have been trying for 4 years. Im even more desperate for it to happen soon now.
