How often do you feed your newborn ?? My 2 week old baby seems to want to nurse more often then just every 2 hours ... just wondering how other babies are .....

Thanks

All the time-at least thats what it felt like. I remember the nights being fairly 1.5/2 hourly but the day time was pretty random. Try not to time it, just go with the flow. The fact is for the first 4-6 weeks its feed feed feed and its pretty difficult to get anything else done as once one feed finishes its only a short time til another BUT it does get better, once your baby is a bit bigger and his tummy is bigger there will be a bigger gap and a better routine. Keep up the good work x

When Meadow was a newborn it could be anything from 1 hour to 4 hours between feeds. In the evenings it was pretty much constant. I think its totally normal for them to feed like that at first.

He's also the right age for a growth spurt. Just keep putting him on and your supply will adjust to meet his needs :)

Mine is 4 weeks and fed 2 to 3 hours apart in the night constantly mornings and evenings for the first 2-3 weeks.
He did a 2 week growth spurt and fed constantly night and day for two days, something is happening now he seems to be just feeding lots in the evening and has a 4 hour stretch of sleep some nights but most of the time he wakes every three hours at night.
I do know he is due for another spurt at 6 weeks once we have done that I presume it'll level out.
Remember too that the weather can really mess with it all we had 2 really hot nights last week and he was feeding for a drink (really short feed 10 mins) every hour or so.
Hang in there it changes. I celebrate the saturdays (cos that was the day he was born) 4 weeks now !!!!!!

thank you so much ladies for all your advice and thoughts , it seems like he can feed several times in an hour at times, he just falls asleep during a feeding and then wakes up 10-15 min later and is hungry again so i continue to nurse, he doesnt sleep much at night, he is up all night and im constantly nursing .... i have realize how serious my friends and family were when they said get my sleep before the baby comes because i dont sleep at all during the night because he is up all night ....

thanks again ladies :hugs:

It's very normal for newborns to fall asleep nursing (and older babies for that matter) because of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK). It might help for you to stroke his hand or jaw while he feeds. If he still dozes off try taking him off and sitting him on your shoulder to wind him, that should wake him up and enable you to pop him back on right away.

Stick with it, it gets easier

Jack used to feed pretty much constantly, like you said, a few times an hour. It does get better and its worth it!

I used to find it felt like he was feeding all the time, then i realised you are supposed to time from the start of the feed. not how long they go from when they finnish. and when i started writing it down to see if there was a pattern it wasnt as bad as i thought. in the first few weeks is was beween 1 and 2 hours now at 11 weeks its roughly 3 hours. james closes his eyes instantly while hes feeding.

I found changing Ellis's nappy woke him enough during night feeds to help wake him to take more food when he fell asleep.

Hi hun,
Jamie feeds hourly! somtimes more ... depends how hot he is too.
Somtimes he will go a few hours between feeds like if hes in the car lol xxxx
