How reliable is the heart rate/gender rule?

Hi everyone,

I had a midwife appointment yesterday and the baby's heart rate was 150 bmp. I asked the midwife what sex she thought it was and she said girl. I was just wondering how reliable this is and what other people's experiences have been? Has this rule worked in general or is it just an old wive's tale. I know it's just a bit of fun but I'm curious! :)

Thank you lots x

Not sure, but ive heard cases where boys have been a high rate as well... I personally don't believe in this theory to be honest, because the rate changes throughout the pregnancy.

I doubt it. I've seen some statistics which showed both male and female heartbeats were averaged out the same.

Also, I do wonder how it would be calculated since baby's heartbeat is always faster in the 1st trimester, going over 150 beats per minute...then will slow down consistently from 2nd Tri onwards.

I've seen a study on it before, I cant reember where, or find it now tho! It did show to be quite accurate, but obviously not every boy is going to be low, and evey girl is going to be high etc.. there are always exceptions to 'rules'
It has however been correct on my 4!

Oooh interesting!! I just find it all so exciting! Thanks for your comments :) I can't wait to find out the sex xx

I do believe in it and also the horse/train theory. Chugging train for a boy and galloping horse (faster) for a girl. We have a doppler and have been listening in, i think i'm having a boy this time xx

Mine LO had a HB of 158 at 14 weeks and we have since found out he is a little boy!! I think its just a bit fo fun really!x

I was always hapy to believe the horse/train theory until this baby... she switches between them both! :haha:

My LO's hearbeat was 174 at 9 weeks. Just checked yesterday at 14 weeks, it has calmed down to 137. Yet we couldn't confirm is it's a boy of girl because it clenched its legs together. Still have to wait hehe

Several midwives said William was a girl going by heart rate but obviously not.

At 15 weeks, LO's heart rate was 139/140. And this week, it's 168.

LOL...so... the theory is out the window for me!

Yep Caitlyn was meant to be a boy because of heart rate.

I saw the midwife yetersay and she told me baby's hb was 148bpm and i am having a girl but she said it was an old wives tale about rate of hb to the sex as long as its between 110-160 all is well :)

mine was 150 so that means girl but nope iam having a little blue one lol x

My little one's was 130 - 140 so abit of a grey area but she is a little girl :D

Thanks everyone. Well I guess I'll just have to wait and see in a couple of weeks :)

the midwives told me my first was a boy as her heart rate was 135bpm.....out popped a girl!

My second was 160bpm and they told me she was a girl, they were right.

This time, I don't know the heart rate but when the midwife listened at 16 weeks she said boy.

My last baby was a girl and she stayed 135 ish the whole way through I'm having a boy now and his heart beat last was 157 can't remember with my oldest two x

It's only a reliable predictor of gender if you are in labor. Girls HB in labor are higher than boys.
