I found out I was pregnant on a Wednesday. I made my doctor's appointment the following Monday (which was Monday of last week) and my appointment isn't until October 6th! I am kinda frustrated because that leaves me with no prenatal vitamins. I could go buy some over the counter, but that kind makes me sick and I can't keep them down. During my last pregnancy the doctor prescribed me the chewable kind for that reason. But I feel like a horrible person for not having my vitamins. By the time I get to see the doctor, I'll be 7 weeks 2 days.

Am I freaking out for no reason?

Speaking from experience, it is REALLY important to take folic acid, even if you can't take anything else. I was actually told to take it while ttc (Not trying to scare you or anything!) They sell that separately from other vitamins and they are small pills that never made me sick. You can also take 2 flinstones chewable vitamins (like for kids) which contains folic acid and also other vitamins. I have a very sensitive stomach (IBS) and I was able to take these without any problems. Good luck and happy pregnancy! :)

Hey, dont worry! I found out i was pregnant about a wk ago. i called my gp who were happy to see me, but that appointment was pretty pointless as in the area where i live we now self refer to the midwife after wk 6. When i do this there are lots of questions aked on the phone but i wont get my 1st proper appt until wk 10, which is 5 wks away!!! Arghhh. re the vitamins, make sure ur taking folic acid & eat all the nutrients u need & u wont need the vitamins!.xxx

Yeah, I think I'll run in the store when I take my husband to work tonight and get some folic acid then. I also googled a list of foods high in folic acid and I've been eating several items on the list. Thanks ladies, I'm such a worry wart lol

I agree with what the other ladies are saying about just taking folic acid for now. A few weeks ago I was in Walgreens and they have gummy prenatal vitamins over the counter in the vitamin aisle. So you may want to check out Walgreens....

There are so many prenatal vitamins that you buy without a prescription, including the chewable kind. I would definitely get some asap. This is my second pregnancy, both doctors told me there was no difference between what you buy and what you get in a prescription prenatal. Of course, there are some differences between brands. Just look at the labels. This is the most critical time to have them though. I would get some.

I saw a doctor about 2 weeks after I found out. I found out a little after 3 weeks, and saw my GP when I was a little over 5 weeks. I saw my OB at 6 weeks, then again at 10 weeks for a "real" appointment.

I didn't know you could get different kinds over the counter that are chewable or otherwise. Last time for me, (which I lived in a very rural town and if one store didn't carry it, you were SOL) the only kind they had OTC was the big horse pills that smell like fish...lol. Will definitely check out Walgreens!

You might be able to talk to the doctors nurse and tell her that your prenatals make you sick and ask if they will prescribe you the ones you used to take with your first pregnancy. They shouldn't have a problem doing this since the vitamins are sooo important especially this early on.

Folic acid and DHA is definitely important to take, they do sell gummie vitamins at drug stores that have that. Iron and calcium is also very important in a prenatal as well. I would at least try something otc, if it makes you sick the Dr will give you a script for chewables :)

Good luck with finding the vitamins at the store, But you can always find anything you could possibly want by shopping online and searching for chewable prenatals in they dont have them in your local store...

Here are some websites I found them online with

Target is one .....

Here is a link to the ones that Walgreens has....

Good luck, I hope you can find what you need...

Thanks for the advice gals! I was able to find the gummies at Walmart. They were kind of expensive ($10 for a 45 day supply) but that's okay. Atleast now I don't feel like I'm leaving gaping holes in my Taterbug's nutrition!

I called to make my appointment at 4 weeks but I won't be seeing a nurse until I'm at 6 weeks and then I have to wait until I'm at 8 weeks to have a real appointment with the obstetrician. This is actually earlier than normal for this office - usually they do nurse at 8 weeks and OB at 10-12 weeks. Anyway, I definitely feel your pain! I've just been taking an OTC prenatal vitamin that's kind of candy-coated, so it goes down more easily than other swallowable ones.

If iron makes you sick... GNC makes a pre-natal (with folic acid) that doesn't contain iron.... Then I take a slow-release iron pill with it... The slow release should agree with your system better. I haven't felt sick since I started taking them... Good luck!

Go ahead and buy some vitamins. I always recommend going to a health food store or going online. Try to find one that is a gel cap rather than a tablet. SOOO much easier on the tummy. I am taking Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal gel caps and have had no problems at all. But definitely start taking a prenatal! Very important. The doctor will schedule you in when they feel you need to be seen so just set something up and get some vitamins to tide you over. My doctor didn't even prescribe me any prenatals - may because I told him I was already taking some - who knows. I prefer mine anyway since I don't like tablets.

I saw my family doctor the next business day after finding out I was pregnant. He did a blood test right away. Then i went back 2 days later to see the results. With my first pregnancy and my last m/c I saw him the day after I found out as well.

Where I live, in order to see an OB we need to get a referral from our family doctor.. and so that's why I go to see him right away. My OB appt isn't until October 27 though...

In the meantime, because you don't have vitamins, try and see what foods have a large about of folic acid... I think i read somewhere that spinich, broccoli and sun flower seeds have folic acid... Some orange juices have it as well.

I took over the counterr prenatals the whole time from beginning to end of pregnancy. If you are really concerned call your doctors office and ask them to send a prescription for you now to the closest pharmacy. I saw my doctor the next morning after finding out I was pregnant just to confirm the pregnancy, then at around 6 weeks because I was spotting. But I found out I was pregnant on November 10 and my first prenatal appointment was until December 8. If it was not fir the spotting I would have gone a whole month without seeing doctor but like I said I was taking over the counter vitamins.
