How soon can you seek help when you have been charting?

This kind of follows on from the thread that Fat Belly posted.

I know that people generally say try for a year before going to your GP, but will your doctor do anything if its been less than that if you have been charting and know that you have been timing it correctly?

We tried initially for a couple of months before I got more clued up and starting temping etc. I have six months of unsuccessful charts but realise that a total of 8 months is not really that long compared to some people.

I know it takes time, but I know that we are timing it right. Am I being selfish and premature in worrying?

If you are in the UK, I don't think they will refer you until you have been trying a year unless your charts are showing something is wrong, like you are not ovulating and are getting flat temperatures. I think that is just NHS policy but I may well be wrong.

But people have been referred earlier so it may be worth speaking to GP.

Depends on where you live. In the UK they won't do anything at all unless it's been 12 months because even with 'charting' the average is still 12 months. I remember going to the doctors after about 12 or 13 months and pushing it a little (I have been off the pill since December 2005 - it was only when I told them that they took me seriously!). I didn't get any realistic investigations until after about 18 months.

I am in the US and my doctor also didn't refer me until I had been trying a year. She said the insurance only would cover it then. Good luck to you!

I'd say most Dr will say 12 months, 6 months of 'timing it right' isnt really very long at all.

We are past the 2 yr mark and I've been charting for about 23 cycles, pretty much spot on timing each month.
We have 'unexplained infertility' - although up until 6 months ago our issues were :spermy: related and irregular ov.

Hey fluffy

We had been ttc for 10 months, temping and doing OPKs when we went to our GP. They agreed to run bloods and SA then and there and unfortunately came back with male factor issues but we didn't have to wait -DH was on meds so i had a good feeling there was an issue.

They say 90% of people ttc conceive within an year so if the charts are looking good give it another couple of months and start the new year with a visit to your doctor.

Good luck xx

i went to the docs with only 3 months of (anovulatory) charts and another fabricated 5 months of ttc beforehand (it was only 3) and within a month i'd had 2 blood tests, a consultant appointment and a trans vag us scan, plus an hsg booked and a pcos diagnosis under my belt.

if your charts are textbook then you will probably need a year behind you but if there is an obvious problem then you will probably be referred. xxx
