How to ask doctor for IUI

Hi everyone,

AF just arrived for me today. I had a 28 day cycle with ovulation on CD 15 or 16, unmedicated after 2 unmonitored cycles of Clomid 100mg days 5-9 and just had an HSG on Aug 11. 28 days is unheard of, as my cycles have always been between 31-36 days.

I have temped in the past (this cycle was the only I didn't) and done OPKs. I also check cervical fluid. As far as timing goes, I feel like we are timing things right and it's still not happening.

I adore my doctor, but one thing I don't like is how slowly things are going. He's definitely not taking the aggressive approach. What he wants to do next is have me take Clomid 100mg days 5-9 again, this time coming in on CD 13 for ultrasound to look at follicles.

My issue is that I feel like we just aren't going to get pregnant with just BDing. Looking at follies and timing is just physically confirming when to time it, and I feel like we are already timing it. Maybe I'm wrong and we've been missing the egg in the past, but I feel like I should really ask him for IUI this cycle.

I'm just worried he will think I'm jumping the gun and will try to talk me into keeping on the slow track.

I want to know of some good strategies to talk to him and try to get him to be more aggressive without me being rude or insulting his knowledge in the field. I also don't want to start crying like I always do.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Edit: FYI, IUI is covered by my insurance.

My Dr's appts go the same way, I usually start crying and my obgyn usually suggests another round of clomid (this is my 5th or 6th). She reasoned that IUI is so expensive and that it's worth trying other methods for 6 months or so.

She's a great Dr but it's frustrating to me to wait this long. I would think for your next visit you should bring some stats, you could show how you've been charting and how long you have been trying. I bet the Drs aren't sure that we're really hitting all the days but it sounds like you are!

Good luck and I hope he listens! If not look up another fertility specialist, life is too short for us to wait years to try IUI!

Thanks! He doesn't really think charting is reliable, so whenever I show him my charts, he doesn't really listen. He does know about the OPKs and he does think cervical fluid is an indicator, so hopefully that will sway him.

It's just so hard to think of how to word my request to him!

I think you should ask for IUI. I dont think its fair to deny you that after what you have been trying... maybe the monitored cycles will be better. Can you do a trigger shot to ensure ovulation at a certain point?

also has DH been evaluated to make sure its not male factor before asking for IUI?

Yes he was above average in all categories, so he is totally fine. I do believe we will be doing the trigger shot this cycle as well. Hoping he is good with the idea of an IUI.

Im glad DH is fine! Maybe tell the dr that you will do this cycle with the ultrasound, trigger, etc but if it doesnt work then you want to do IUI...maybe as a compromise if dr doesnt let you do IUI now? Although I think the dr should totally be supportive of you!
