Hi all!

If I have a girl, I would really like to name her Amelie. I think it's a very beautiful and unique name. However, I'm not sure how to pronounce it without sounding a bit of an idiot!

It's a very French name. When I say it, it either sounds like I can't pronounce Emily (according to what I've looked up elsewhere on the net, that really winds French people up when English people do that) or I sound like I'm trying to be slightly French.

Does anyone know if someone not French can actually pronounce this name and make it sound as beautiful as it is? And am I setting my child up for a lifetime of of having to correct people who say her name wrong?

Thanks x

ive always thought it was pronounced A Mel E?? xx

i would pronounce it A- Mel -E but not sure if that is correct, its your babies name hun you pronounce it the way you want to!

As the others have said A-mel-ee is how Ive always heard it pronounced.

I'm not sure if I'm saying the same thing as others have said or if I pronounce it differently phonectically...I always thought it was Ahh Mel Ee NOT AY Mel ee...I do speak french, dunno if that makes a difference?

I love that name

I am french... but would pronounce it Ah - May - Lee

Thanks ladies :)

I think I've decided and if it's a girly, Amelie it is!

Ahh Meh Lee (or at least that's how they pronounced it on that sitcom Tales from the Underbelly.

It 's Ah Meh Ly
nearly all has the same stress and the 'a' is like in card

In the original French pronunciation the a is a short one, as in Amber. Ive never heard it as Ar-me-lie before:shrug:

well thats why i wrote it Ah - i first wanted to write it liek in dance but then there are people who pronounce dance like dahns and some more like dens
that why i picked card because the r isnt hearable anyway in many time s...

I love the name Amelie... I would pronounce it

Ah - as in 'Apple'
Me as in 'MEAsure'
Lee - as in 'LEAp'

with most stress on the Ah part... crikey, trying to write sounds is difficult...!
