How would you pronounce?

Do Americans call Milan 'mi-lawn'?! Wow that's so random to me!

I pronounce it like the place mil-ANN

Mi-LAN, like the place. I don't see this my-lawn stuff here, I've only ever heard it Mi LAN or Mi Lahn, not lawn!

Wouldn't mi-lahn & mi-lawn sound the same?

At least the way I say it, they do. But then accents thru-out the US differ quite a bit, too.

I'm curious how the OP prefers it pronounced - and if it's intended for a boy or a girl?

No, there are differences here for sure. Hard to put into text though!

The name is for a boy. It's actually a common Indian name pronounced like Dylan with an M. Not sure if it would help to spell it Milun? Probably should decide soon as I'm being induced tomorrow morning :)

Congrats Future Mama! I'm also Indian and love the name Milan (with the Indian pronunciation) but I think it will initially be pronounced like the Italian city. I don't think it is a big deal though, one correction and I think people will get it. You could try spelling it Milun or Milin.

Good luck tomorrow! Let us know what you decide!!

Mee-Laan - that's in Australia though, so my opinion might be void :)

How about spelling it Millen, then it's get the correct pronounciation :)

I like this suggestion. I would probably keep getting it wrong if I met someone called Milan and it wasn't pronounced like the city, just because I'm so used to pronouncing it that way (might be just me who would do this though!). I'd pronounce Millen like Dylan.

As close as we are in geographical location, I'm pretty sure we're pronouncing the same lol BUT Lawn and Lahn sound the same to me! I definitely pronounce it Mi (like in Spanish) - Lawn/Lahn...there maybe a very subtle difference between Lawn/Lahn with me leaning more towards Lahn.

BTW this is the name of Shakira's son I believe, but I definitely prefer it feminine.

Millen seems like the safest way to spell it so that everyone will certainly pronounce it like Dylan with an M.

Completely agree with the Millen suggestion, that will make it alot easier I think.

Mi-lahn (the a as in laugh or car).

Mi-lawn sounds nothing like mi-lahn to me? It would be like saying laugh is prounouced as lorf.

A lot of people from the US sound like they say laff for laugh to me though so what I said may make no sense. I probably sound like I say larf!

I would pronounce it like the city in Italy. For a Chicagoan, that would be Mill-ahn. For a Chicagoan who's been to Italy, it would be Mee-lahn ;)
