How you make up bottles....

I boil my kettle with fresh water, leave it for 20 minutes then pour it in the bottles. I then cool them quickly by putting them in a bowl full of cold water then put them straight in the fridge. I then make up each bottle as needed by adding the formula and heating up.

i used to

sterilise bottles
boil water
leave to cool

add powder when feed needed

now though i just use ready made

sterilise the bottles
add milk as needed

I use bottled water as well- but not bottled water meant for adults. They sell gallon jugs here of pre-sterilized baby water- is that not sold over there? I then make up bottles as needed, adding powder at room temp. When she was really tiny and we were transitioning from EBM I fed her sterile ready-to-drink formula. I'd like to make up bottles beforehand and store them in the fridge but Carmen doesn't have a set amount that she usually drinks, and I got tired of guessing and wasting formula!

I have a big jug with a sealed lid on which I steralise every day then fill with boiled water to cool. Then when I need to make a bottle I add 1oz into a bottle add my powder then fill up with the cool boiled water out ofthe jug. I find the powder dos t mix as well to cool water and with the powder being added to boiling water it kills any germs. It's also ready right when i need it at the right temp xx

I make all my feeds up and store them in the fridge I make sure I use them all within 24hours!!!

Never had a problem with my son and so far so good with Maisie x

I tend to make the bottles fresh if I can - but do premake a couple a day and put them in the fridge - in particular the one incase there is a night feed required, and the first one for the morning feed.

I was advised by my HV that the formula MUST be made with water at a temp over 70 degrees - not water that is cooled- or the possible bacteria would not be killed. Prior to that I was boiling the water I needed- putting them in the bottles then adding powder when required.

She advised me not to do this! However I know HV all seem to give different advice so who can say whats right?

We were told that boiling the water is unnecessary, however we do use filtered water because our water tastes very mineral-y here. We just add water to all the bottles we will need for the day and then mix the formula in later. At night time we do make all the bottles up for our night feeds and feed straight from the fridge.

i boil the water and put it in the bottles then just add the powder as each feed is needed. I do heat the water up tho before adding the powder as i think i mixes better with warm water

through the day i make them up as needed but at night i make premake them for the night :) <3 x

I'm currently using cartons on the advice of the midwives at least until he is 4 weeks old, my little man is eating loads so going through so much food.

Have i got this right, if i premake bottles for the day/night, i use cooled boiled water (about 30mins) then can i add the formula and then store in the fridge for no more than 24hours? (a bit like cartons?) or just store the water in the fridge and add formula when warmed up?.

Those of you who leave the bottles out at room temp, do you just add the formula and go?, does that kill the germs?. Sorry for all the questions new mum alert!!

If you add the formula to water that's fully cooled, it doesn't kill any nasties in the formula - that's why it is no longer recommended. A lot of people have done it this way for years because it is easy - but there is some risk.

If you add the formula to the water while it's still hot enough, cool and keep in the fridge, this is the next best way to making it up fresh. The hot water should kill anything in the formula, so everything should be sterile. By storing in the fridge anything that had managed to survive all the heat and sterilisation can't multiply. It requires a bit more work and thought, but it is safer IMO.

The World Health Organisation (who are responsible for the guidelines), say that making up a fresh bottle is possible, and making it up hot and storing in the fridge as the next best.

It is rather a balancing act between safety and practicality.

I don't do what your friend does as I wouldn't add powder to water less than 70 degrees. I make them all up in the morning, quick cool and store at the back of the fridge :) I then heat to room temp when she wants a bottle :)

I do this. It's what my hospital recommended. Adding the powder to cool/room temp boiled water isn't hot enough to kill any bugs that could be in the powder so they recommend to make them, cool quickly and then store in back of fridge xx

So when u do this, do u store the bottles with the water in the fridge with the teats on the bottles? Sorry just having a panic lol xx

I make them all up for the day and store them in the fridge.

I tried other ways, a lot of other ways, and this worked best for us.

We used to do this!! then my HV had the biggest go at us  ! So we started sterilising, then adding boiling water to all bottles and then leaving out on the side and just adding powder as we need it. I must say its soooo much quicker now as we dont have to warm it up from the fridge! its just a matter of adding powder x

I agree, that's why I do it this way...

Boil the water and add to bottles for the whole day. But say I am making a 5oz bottle, I will add only 3 1/2 oz and then top up to 5oz with fresh boiled water when I am ready to add the powder for a feed. Quick, easy and kills the bugs whilst having a warm bottle (great way to do it for babies that don't like room temp bottles). :)

thats what i do:thumbup:

I was told that the powder isnt sterile, so you should add hot water to the powder then cool quickly if you want to store in the fridge for upto 12 hours.

I half fill the bottles with boiling water then let them cool for 30 mins, then in the fridge. When he wants a feed I top the water up to what i need usually 8oz so its then hot enough to kill bugs and warm enough for his feed and quick enough for him not to scream the house down lol x

I premade formula using the concentrate we have over here rather than the powder ... put into sterilized bottles, caps on, in the fridge.

I put powder in the bottles ready for the day. Add boiled water to a bottle when it is needed then cool in a bowl of cold water till the right temp, and use straight away :)

i used to pre make all my bottles with water at leat 70 degrees this then kills any bacteria in the powder, then warm through with either boiling water or microwave. i gave rhys his milk at what was about body temp as this is what nature says when bf'ing is the best temp, room temp to seems cold to me and made rhys windy :)

Just seen this thread.. so can I ...

1) Boil Water
2) Put Formula and Boiling water in Bottle
3) Shake - and refrigerate
4) KEEP for 24 hours?

I'm confused as to why they say bin after 2 hours on the tin?
*argg*
