HSG and Hysteroscopy after lap & dye

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help?

Is it normal / has anyone had either a HSG or hysteroscopy (or even both) performed after a lap & dye?

I had a lap & dye done 3 months ago - extensive endometriosis found and removed, right ovary was stuck down due to endo, but both ovaries normal and healthy at end of procedure, dye test was fine and notes report uterus is healthy.

Following lap & dye we have been referred to a local Assisted conception unit.

While speaking to the ACU to ensure my referral had finally been accepted (this was a 2 month battle), I asked about what to expect and was told that first I would have to see their gynaecologist who would do a HSG and hysteroscopy and didn't see why a laparoscopy had been done (endometriosis was not expected before the lap, although that is due to not being asked many questions about my periods as having since done a bit of research, I had most of the symptoms).

Having turned to google, from what I can work out a HSG checks the tubes and hysteroscopy checks the uterus. Given that my dye test was fine and the notes from the lap & dye state a healthy uterus - why would I now need either a HSG or hysteroscopy?

So other than NHS red tape and inefficiency - is there any reason for this?

We now know that IUI / IVF is required for us to conceive, as hubby is azoospermic from chemotherapy but has pre-banked sperm. However 10 months post azoospermia was diagnosed and 2 years since we started ttc, we are still no closer to actually getting on the waiting list for either IUI / IVF - arghhhhh!

Sorry for the long post (and rant) and thanks to anyone who has managed to read it all!

dont want to read and run but I am not sure - i had an HSG done, and due to 1 blocked tube am now having laparoscopy, hystercopy and 2 other things (laser something) on the NHS (but waiting for a letter....)
good luck

I'm having my lap and dye and hysterecopy today. If there is a change in my tube status I would want a hsg to ensure thy remained open. Based on what you said I would likely have it so that you are doing omething like iui and find out later after urgery tubes were blocked. I wish you Luckand open tubes.

Thank you Ducktales. Good luck with your laparoscopy & hysterscopy, are you having both done at the same time? Fingers crossed you don't have to wait too long. And I have learnt not too feel guilty about chasing up letters expected from the NHS!

I had an HSG done before the lap/hys/dye...The HSG verifies that the tubes are open and without ''holes'' and the hys is to verify more specificly for frbroids, scar tissue, polyp ect. Normally a hys is done at the same time as a lap which im surprise your wasnt!!! Good luck though...

Thank you Lawyer Chick.

Hope your lap & dyes and hysterscopy went well today and you don't suffer too badly with the shoulder pain from the gas.

The report from my lap shows open tubes and good spillage from the dye post endo removal and no blocks  If its needed I will def have the procedures but just hoping it doesn't delay getting onto the waiting list for IUI / IVF any longer (def this route for us hubby has zero count due to chemo but pre banked sperm).

Now have a cancellation slot for pre-assessment in ACU this week, so fingers crossed I get some answers and an idea of next steps.

What you say is what I expected. Have an appointment now this week so hopefully will get more answers face to face than over the phone! But the person in ACU I spoke to on the phone was also surprised a hsy wasn't done at same time

Are you on the NHS as well?

Snowy bird. Thank you. Things did go well. I was trying to be an optimist but given length of ttc etc I thought results would be bad and they were not. Tubes are open so we are going do some follow up bloodwork such as ovarian reserve.

Hi there, I had HSG last year on the NHS but the result was not conclusive they could not see the right tube and thought there was something wrong with my uterus lining so they sent me for Hysteroscopy and lap & dye. I had it last month. turned out to be completely unnecessary. they did not find anything and on top of that I got an infection and also this operation screwed my cycle. it used to be 27-28 days with ovulation on CD13-14 now I have a 22 day cycle and not even sure if I ovulate. am totally upset about the whole thing. I should not have let them do that, it was just a box ticking exercise for my FS so she can now refer me for IVF but it made my chances for natural pregnancy worse.

Lawyer Chick, thats great your tubes are open - fingers crossed you get some answers soon though for length of TTC.

Briss, I hope this cycle returns to normal for you. I feel your frustration with the box ticking exercise - and for me it's so annoying that each box seems to take 2-3 months to get ticked - argh!

We had our first appointment within ACU this week, and fortunately getting a copy of my records from the gynaecologist who did my lap & dye, means that I don't know have to have a HSG done (the lap notes clearly stated open tubes after endo removed). So next step is scan and more blood tests (my last D21 was low so needs to be done again) and appointment with doctor to discuss IVF / IUI in 6 weeks.

So after a year since zero SA, it finally feels like we are making some progress.
